Hi - I'm new to the list, but not to genealogy. My Denbigh roots begin with William Evans born about 1844 in Llandderfel to Evan Evans and his wife who I think was Elizabeth Jones.
If I'm correct, they were married in 1827 in Llandderfel and had the following children:
Anne born c. 1830
John born c. 1832
Elizabeth born c. 1835 - she is listed in the Llandderfel parish register as being baptized there, no other of the children appear in that parish register.
Gwen born c.1837
Morris born c.1841
then William
Census records show all children to be born in Llandderfel.
According to census info, the family lived in Byrgoedbach in the 1841-1871 census. Evan died between 1871 and 1881 census - he was born between 1792 and 1797 in Llangwm. Elizabeth died between William's birth and the 1851 census - don't know where she was born.
After Evan died, his daughter and son-in-law continued to live in the house for the 1881 census.
William married Margaret Lloyd (born Corwen c. 1842) about 1865 - their daughter Elizabeth in my great grandmother. William died in 1888 (in the village of Dyffryn Ardudwy) and Elizabeth in 1918 (in the same village, born Llanbedr 1874, married John Griffith 1894).
I am also trying to establish a genetic history to intestinal cancer where people die at a very young age (under 50).
If I'm related to anyone on the list, please let me know, I'd love to share information.
Can anyone tell me if I could look at any non-conformist registers in this time period - and which cemetary they might have been buried in?
Best Wishes, Anita in Canada

Only the 1841 censuses for Ruabon and Wrexham are lost, there is no problem with surrounding areas of Chirk, Llangollen, etc..

Still between what my father in law and his brother are recalling and the census. etc I seem to be doing at the moment - does you know if the 1841 census for Denbighshire is complete as I can find my Samuels family in 1851 but not earlier but they definitely had two children before 1841.........oops sorry to jump on your post. Don't think there's a link yet....Edward and Elizabeth were born in the 1830s so it looks like its a bit later than your Elizabeth Edwards but I've only just started.

Sorry - thought I gave more info. My Elizabeth Edwards was born c. 1808 and married William Howell about 1833 or so. She died young in 1841 of consumption. Two kids, William and Ann Howell. Does that match anything you have?

Hi, Just browsing this site when I saw this message. My daughter is looking into her fathers side and there are Matthias there. I looked at your tree and saw a Doris Matthias married to a Warburton, you have no parents for Doris but on the 1911 census they are Robert Matthias 45, Jessie 45 married 22 years. A look on the North Wales marriages gives a marriage for Robert Matthias and Jessie Roberts 1889 St Giles Wrexham. I do not know if your family connects to my in laws but as most seem to come from Brymbo and Pentre Broughton there may be a connection, I will have to ask my daughter. Regards Norma

I would like to find information regarding the descendants of John Davies (Einion Ddu), 1819-1906, who was born near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales (perhaps in Llanycil). His father was John Davies (1786-1857), who was my great-great-great grandfather. John Davis (the father) was born in Merionethshire and his mother's name was Mary (I believe her maiden name was Lloyd, 1790-1877, born in or near Llanuwchllyn). The father was a shoemaker and a leader in the Calvinistic Methodist Chapel (Ty Capel Llwyneinion) on the outskirts of Bala. The family lived for many years across the road from the chapel.
John Davies (Einion Ddu) was married to Susannah Williams. He was also a shoemaker. He lived for a time in Llangollen, Denbighshire, and for many years was the post master and lived at the Post Office in Tregeiriog, Denbighshire. He won some notoriety as a poet, winning some prizes at local eisteddfodau, and he published a book of poems and also wrote a catechism for children. They had (at least) two daughters: Mary (1849- ) and Margaret (1857- ). I believe they also had a grand daughter named Mary Ann (1877- ) and a grandson named D. C. Jones (who donated some of his grandfather's papers to the National Library of Wales in 1967-68). But I am not sure who the parents of the grandchildren are.
John Davies (Einion Ddu) had a brother: David Lloyd Davies (Dewi Glan Peryddon), 1830-1881, who was born at Llwyneinion and was also a shoemaker, poet, and singer. He won several prizes at local and other eisteddfodau in Wales, including the national eisteddfod of 1865. About 1870, he emigrated to the U.S. and also won prizes at eisteddfodau in America. I believe he lived in Kansas at one point. He died and is buried near Waterville, Wisconsin. He may have had a wife Ellen and a son John.
John Davies (Einion Ddu) also had four sisters. Jane (1822-1904) was my great-great-grandmother. In 1846, she married David C. Jones (1818-1893, born near Llanuwchllyn). They emigrated to the United States in 1847, and eventually settled in Wisconsin. I know very little about the other three sisters: Ellen (1825- ), Margaret (1827- ), and Elizabeth (1833- ).
I would appreciate any information or tips that anyone is willing to share. I am hoping to visit Wales next year.

Hi Listers,
I an trying to find my great grandfather WILLIAM WALTER WALTERS' date of
birth. He was born in Denbigh, Denbighshire about 1840(?) - his father was
possibly ROBERT WALTERS.
1871 Census - WILLIAM WALTER WALTERS (age 31) was a career Army soldier
stationed at Stoke Damerol Devon where he married MARY ANN VINING in 1873.
In 1875 he was in Barrackpore India where my grandmother ARTHURINE VINING
WALTERS was born in 1875. I have her birth certificate.
1891 Census he was stationed in Woolwich (age 51) where his other children
MARY, ALFRED, HILDA & FLORENCE LILIAN were all born.
1901 Census He was still in Woolwich (age 59)
1911 Census he stated he was age 72 - however when he re-enlisted in the Army
in 1915 he gave his age as 53 being 'let go' in 1916 with Army stating he was
73.
I think I have found his death in 1921 age 82 and am awaiting the certificate
to prove it or not. I have also sent for his marriage certificate.
I have looked through several years for his birth both on Ancestry and
Findmypast with no luck. If anyone has him in their family I'd love to hear
from you. I have not been unable to find the attestation papers for his first
enlistment nor the 1881 British Overseas Census when I think he was still
with the Army India. Hopefully fresh eyes will knock these brick walls down.
Thanks, Gill in Canada
