Thank you very much for all this info - now I know what I'm looking for it makes life a lot easier, and with the sites which you gave me too. I'll dig out the very bad copies of the census info and get those references to post. As I thought my father's family were all from Glamorgan, North Wales is unfamiliar territory, but I'm learning! Our local family history centre in Queensland, Australia doesn't have much about Wales on file, but I'm amazed that I've got as far as I already have.
Thanks again
Carol

It would help if you gave names or piece numbers so people could take a look for themselves.
Carreg y Ffordd is a mile or so South West of Tal y Bont.
SH 760 683
Seems to be a farm. You can see on Multimap - Select OS maps and keep zooming in, it will change to 1:25000 map. You can also see aerial view there.

Henefail is shown on the 1:50000 as Hen Efail at around SH 776 730.
COFLEIN does not have a record for Hen Efail but you can see on the 1:10000 map.
Another place to look is http://www.geograph.co.uk, you might find photographs of the locations there.
I can't find the other locations without more information though sure you will be able to find on the maps.

I have the HDS CDs which show pre-1850 parish boundaries. Pandy Tudor was in Llangernyw parish.

Hello everyone
I've just joined this list and am having some trouble sifting through the
masses of similar names in researching my Welsh ancestors. The two main
families I'm researching are WILLIAMS and JAMES.
I've taken the WILLIAMS line back to Robert Williams, who married Hannah
Jones, settled in Coedpoeth, and had seven children including my Gt
Grandfather Jeremiah. This is all confirmed by census returns, however
beyond that research is very frustrating. Censuses consistently suggest
Roberts birth as 1834 in Mold or Halkin, but I've not been able to find any
birth record for that year that matches. The nearest I've found on IGI lists
a birth in Mold for 4th June 1836 (parents Thomas & Harriet nee Jones) but I
can't be sure it's correct. I've not been able to find any definite marriage
record for Robert & Hannah Jones, nor any indication of siblings for Robert.
The JAMES family were from Chirk, though more recent generations settled in
Froncysyllte. Thomas James (born abt 1830 in Chirk) was a limeworker, later
blacksmith, one of 7 children and married Margaret Williams (abt 1829 - ).
His parents were John (abt 1801~06 - ) and Mary (abt 1808~9 - ), who appear
to have been farmers. I've not been able to isolate any clear information of
John's generation, parentage etc.
Any help on these families is greatly received!
All the best
John

Many thanks for the replies. I'm still trying to understand Caerhun....it looks small, but are there street names? In 1841 my ancestors are at Carreg y fford, in 1851 they are at Tyn Rhos, can't find 1861, in 1871 in Tyn ? doesn't look like Rhos. and from 1881 they stayed in Henefail. Would these all be farms? Or maybe street names?
