Hi Renee. Greetings from Wales. You may like to consider joining the Clwyd Family History Society: www.clwydfhs.org.uk as the society publishes Parish Registers. I see that there are 4 volumes but I think the one that may be of interest to you is issue 1 as it covers dates from 1592 to 1744.
Good luck in your search.
Mike Davies

I have a William Jeanes who was in Virginia by 1637. In court records he says he was from Ruthin, Denbigh.
I see that records are not available through the LDS.
Does anyone know of a Jeanes/Jeynes/Janes family that was in this area in that time period?
Thanks for any help!
Renee

Hi All,
I am looking for the birth certificate of Ellen Evans. She married in 1900
(aged 28) and died in 1955 (aged 83). From this information I'm guessing
she was born 1871/1872. Her marriage certificate doesn't say where she was
from but census information suggests she came from Ruthin. Also on the
marriage certificate is her father's name.
To be honest I have already purchased 3 birth certificates (costly mistakes)
and am reluctant to keep spending money until I find the right one. Is
there any way I can check that a birth certificate has the father's name of
David Ellis Evans before I purchase another certificate?
I searched the FreeBMD website and have come across the following
possibilities:
Jun 1870 Holywell 11b 275
Jun 1870 St Asaph 11b 421
Mar 1871 St Asaph 11b 402
Dec 1871 Holywell 11b 237
Help!
Regards
Nicola
Oh, yes I know the problems with this surname! We often find it even written as Janes or Jeanes but transcribed as Jones/Joanes and James/Jeames, which makes for a lot of long and careful research!
That is why I'm afraid to send the money for copies without knowing there was a Jeanes family there. He may have moved to Denbigh after his birth.
Thank You,
Renee

Hello Renee
Ruthin church baptisms start from 1592 and are in the archives in Ruthin itself. Clwyd FHS have transcribed the registers and you can purchase a copy
http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/registers/index.html
However, a word of warning !! That surname sounds like it could be a corruption of Jones - a name, as you know, very popular in Wales.

I am trying to find out if there was a Jeanes or Janes family in Ruthin, Denbigh in the 1600's. A William Jeanes aged about 26 in 1640, who was in Virginia stated he was from Ruthin, Denbigh.
I know nothing more about him and since the birth/christening records aren't available to the LDS, I don't know where to begin.
Thanks for any help!

Bromaelor, what can I say--superb research--beat me to the Perkins family! Looking at the map (Pentre Clawdd), I have gone round that roundabout at Gobowen on the A5 many time over the years when visiting family and friends in West Felton, Shrewsbury and Welshpool--amazing!

Confirmed! In 1851 Sarah Perkins, born Pentre Clawdd, is living nearby in Selatyn with her father Samuel, born Criggion, Montgomeryshire. She appears to have spent the rest of her life in Cheshire.

In the later censuses she gives her place of birth as Shropshire. So I suspect you are looking at Pentre Clawdd, between Gobowen and Oswestry: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=329500&Y=332500&A=Y&Z=120

Bromaelor many thanks for your info and yes you are spot on with Sarah. My mistake was googling Pentreland-as you did-and coming up with the county of Denbigh for my post. Any chance you can point me in the right direction or give me a map reference for "Pentreclawdd"?
Cheers, Spingo

There is a Pentreland in Radnorshire but you said Denbighshire? I had already found the document you point to. If you search Google for "Pentland" and "Denbigh" that is the ONE document that appears so I am highly sceptical about the entire document! However, I suspect you are looking for Sarah Spragg on the 1881 census then I can assure you that her place of birth is "Pentreclawdd, Wales".
"Pentre" means "Village" and "Clawdd" means "Dyke".

Bromaetor, try this link www.gravesfa.org/gen236.htm item 17 on the site. I have also just found a listing on OS map near Bleddfa, Knighton, Powys, Wales, LD7. It looks like the word "Pentre" is quite common in Wales-what does the word mean in Welsh?

I'm certain there is no such place as "Pentreland"! It has to be a bad transcription. Can you give us a reference to where you've come across it?
Otherwise, how about Pentrefelin; Pentredwr, Pentrefoelas; Pentre Saron; Pentre Isaf; .... and lots more.

Hello
I'm new to this list ... first time.
I have just discovered ancestors that were Licensed Victuallers in the 1841 census
and lived at Church Street Llangollen.
They being Absolom and Sarah Evans (nee: Jones)
I was wondering if anyone can tell what pubs would have been in this street
at this time (1841).
It appears one of their sons, Joseph, was the Inn Keeper at teh Sun Inn in REgent Street in the 1881 census.
I would be grateful if someone could direct me to a web site to find out the history of the Sun Inn
and perhaps pubs in Church Street.
Jude

Is it possible that, in the era that you are looking at, that Denbighland could just be the general district? Maybe a forerunner of Denbighshire? I don't think I have ever seen a mention of Denbighland anywhere on my travels around the area when I was working as a travelling brewery engineer.
