I agree there are a lot of Joseph Wright's in Staffordshire. To make it more difficult Joseph's place of birth is given as Tipton (which was in the Dudley Registration District) or Bilston (which was in the Wolverhampton Registration District). But if you get his father's name from the marriage certificate in Bishop Auckland then the GRO should be able to find his birth certificate (assuming that the father is Daniel that is!)
Who are your Edwards'?

Thank you all for your help.
I have a feeling that the family found in crook are the right ones. I have looked at the different census's and there are quite a few discrepancies with age's, where Joseph was born etc, but I am going to send for joseph and Maria's wedding certificate. This will give me where he was born and his father's name. I think that would be my safest bet. There are too many Joseph Wright's born in Staffordshire.
Once again thanks for your help. I may need some more help in the future because some of my Edwards side of the family came from Wales.
Regards
Eleanor

No time scale at all and I just want information like when they first opened etc and more than anything "pictures". I feel far too much of old Wrexham has disappeared and now there is the threat that Grove Park is to be demolished.

My reading of the 1891 census gives Joseph's place of birth as Pentre, nr(near) Wrexham. This could be either Pentre Broughton or Pentre near Chirk.

I think I've found them!
I notice that there is a Daniel (born 1815, Ruabon) and Elinor Wright (born 1826, Bersham) living in Crook in the 1881 census.
In 1891 this Daniel (born 1821, Wales) is a widower and living in Crook, with his son David (born 1846, Wales). He is still there in 1901.
In the 1871 census Daniel (born 1815, Ruabon) and Ellenor (born 1826, Bersham) are living in Treuddyn in Flintshire and they have sons named Joseph (born 1847 Bilston, Staffordshire) and David (born 1846, Bersham).
In the 1851 census they are living in Tipton in Staffordshire, with Joseph (born 1849, Tipton) and David (born 1847, Wrexham).
They did move around a bit!!!
So I think you need to be looking for Joseph's birth in Staffordshire not Wrexham!

I've looked at the 1891 census and I read the place of birth as "Pentre" near Wrexham. Possibly Pentre Broughton?
However, I can see no matching census entries for 1861 or 1871 neither can I see a matching birth in the NWBMD.

If the place was "Penke" that Joseph Wright was born, and looking at the actual Census images, rather than what it may say in the Index, there is great doubt about it!However taking the Index at face value, this may be Penycae,a village some five miles from Wrexham, near Rhosllanerchrugog.

I searched long and hard for a suitable Joseph Wright in the earlier Census years, but without success I'm afraid. You were correct in thinking this is a particularly tricky name. The only thing I can advise is to get the Marriage Certificate. It appears Joseph Wright married a Maria Ellen Clarke in the October Quarter of 1878,the GRO Reference is Volume 10a,Page 225.

I know this is a long shot because of the common name but can anyone please help find a Joseph Wright born ( PENKE ? ) Wrexham, Denbigshire abt 1850/51(as on the Durham 1881 census). From 1881 onwards he was living in Durham with his wife. Trying to find him before this. I would think he would be single and living with his family in 1871 as his wife would have only been 13.

To put it simply - yes - is the answer to your question.
The freeBMD site records the GRO reference numbers from those registrations
of Birth Marriages and Deaths that have been transcribed, by volunteers, from
the national registers (ie the GRO) for the want of a better phrase.
Meanwhile "whatever county or region"bmd.org under the umbrella ukbmd.org
transcribes the entries using the "local" reference numbers used by the district
registrar. This is why when you successfully lookup one specific person's
registration event on both indices you get different reference numbers.
To search for more than one year at a time on the umbrella UKbmd sites hold
the ctrl key down whilst clicking on the years you wish to search.
You must remember also that neither transcriptions are complete on line as
yet and that due to the relocation of the GRO records access has now been
stopped but Freebmd scanned and copied many entries prior to its closure thanks
to volunteers who went down to the offices armed with modern day box brownies!
Civil registration commenced on 1st July 1837 so the indices can offer
reference numbers in either local or national registers from that date, if they
have been transcribed once the records are released by the holding
organisation. Better still, only in 1875 did it become a legal requirement to register
such BMD events.
You may find that some parish registers overlap the commencement of civil
registration - just as well as there was no penalty for not registering at the
district office.

Is the North Wales BMD completely separate from the Free BMD site? How
do they differ?
I tried searching for a death on the North Wales BMD in a ten year span,
but found the directions to do so did not work as expected. I could only
get a search for one year at a time. Why?
Specifically I am trying to find these three individuals who were on the
1861 census at Gwytherin, Denbighshire, Wales and not listed in 1871.
Since the parents were in their 80's then, it is possible they died
before 1871.
John HUGHES, born about 1773
Jane HUGHES, born between 1778 and 1781
David HUGHES, born 1805
Ruth Ann Baker in the United States
Looking for clues about Japheth HUGHES who was born about
February 1826 in Gwytherin, Denbighshire, Wales (according to 1851 Welsh
census and 1900 United States census).
He was with his parents and oldest brother at Graig Bach in
Gwytherin for the 1841 census--John, Jane, and David.
When the 1851 census was taken he was living as a lodger with a
Calvinistic Methodist preacher (also born in Denbighshire) and his family
at Rhyl, Flintshire, Wales. He and another lodger from Denbighshire were
both journeymen joiners. How would I find who he trained under and for
how long? Since he was apparently the youngest son in the family and his
oldest brother (some 20 years older) stayed on the family farm, did he
seek another occupation in order to earn a living?
In December 1852 he married a Maria WILLIAMS at Independent
Chapel in Chester, Cheshire. What would have taken him from Rhyl to
Chester?
Japheth and Maria had their first son, Henry HUGHES, in August
1853 in Chester. In August 1854 they arrived in New York City and
eventually settled in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio where eight
daughters were born. Were there a number of individuals and families
that left this area of Wales and England at this time for the United
States? If so, why? And how did they decide where to locate after
arrival?

To William - sorry for delay in reply. I think we are definitely both on the same track here!!! I've done some more research and the brothers and sisters names are beginning to match up nicely! It would be interesting to compare info. I have quite a bit going further back up the Hallam lines which seems to tie in. My mum (John Henry aka Jack's daughter from the 2nd marriage)is very interested in any info about John Henry and his brothers and sisters. She was a child when he died and had not seen him for some years prior to this. Any memories will be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon
