Strange that Free BMD states that Joseph married Elizabeth in West Derbt, Liverpool in 1874. Could they be yours?

We live in Southport. I thought of joining the FHS, are the resources open to non-members? Now I have got through the proverbial brick wall I am really keen to get started on these families. I have found that people were economical with the truth on the censuses, but at least I now have a starting point. I can't thank you enough.

They certainly moved around! Unfortunately they also seem confused as to where they were born as in the 1841 census they all have Flintshire.
There are no further baptisms in Chirk or Ruabon so John & Pheobe may have moved strait to Leeswood? You might want to start looking in the Mold and Hope registers (for Leeswood and Pontybodkin). I don't have these but Tecwyn may be able to look them up for you.
If John Tudor was born in Ellesmere (as stated on the 1851 census) then it might be more difficult as I believe these only exist on microfiche. I did try searching them once but gave up as they were almost unreadable!
Access to records of course is dependent on where you live. The main archives in north-east are the Flintshire Archive in Hawarden, the Denbighshire Archive in Ruthin, the Wrexham Archive or the Clwyd FHS Resource Centre in Cefn Mawr (a couple of minutes way from Newbridge!).

I found the Tuder family in Mold in the 1841 Census. Going back to my original query, I would like to get further back if possible with the Tudor or even the Davies family, where would I need to go to find parish records?

Good question! I have tried all kinds of searches, just using Tudor, using various spellings of Pearce - nothing. I was surprised to find them in Madeley, as I said before, things aren't always what they seem. The story of coming from Wales to Bolton in Lancashire because Mary died and Sarah was only young, well, she was 10 in the 1881 Census and very often children were working by then. I don't know what made them come to Bolton, perhaps there was family there. My brother who is a lot older than me says that as a child he remembers a lady coming to see grandma in a carriage! Posh! He never knew who it was although my mother mentioned an Elizabeth! I can't ask because my mum died 32 years ago. At least now I feel that I have made a bit of headway, thanks to kind people like you. You mention Leeswood, that is where Mary Tudor was living when she married, I always felt that if she married around 1850 that there must have been other children, before Mary Ann, and foun!
d a Jane and a John in the 1861 England Census. Who says they didn't get around much in those days!
Chris

You can ignore the possibility of William being in Abenbury. I had already ruled that out but forgot to delete it.
I think that Mary Ann Pierce was not born in Barrow in Furness but in Ruabon (1859 Q2 Wrexham 11b 348)
You need to work out now:
In the 1851 census, if John was lodging in Minera, where was Pheoebe?
Also in the 1851 census where are William and Mary Pierce, and probably several other children?

Thank you so much! I have found that people weren't always truthful when completing the census forms, I have been trying for years to find this family. I knew that grandmother Sarah was born in Wales, it was said that she and her father walked from Wales to Bolton (of all places) because her mother died when she was young and there was no on to look after her. Imagine my surprise to find them in Madeley and that she had at least two siblings. My mother was born when Sarah was in her 40's and Sarah died before I was born so I have had to rely on stories my mother told us. To anyone doing the family history it's the familiar story, the truth was embroidered a little. Why they came to Bolton is anyone's guess, perhaps there was family there. That's my next quest.
Thank you for your help.
Chris

Newbridge was in the old township of Coed Cristionydd in Ruabon. Its name comes from the new bridge that was built to take the Ruabon to Chirk road over the River Dee. But, the area on the other side of the bridge, in Chirk parish, was also known as Newbridge and I think this is where Mary Tudor was born!
I think you are looking at:
- 23 Dec 1826: John Tudor married Phebe Davies at Chirk parish church.
- 4 Jul 1827: Elizabeth Tudor, d/o John (blacksmith) and Pheobe of Penyclawdd, baptised at Chirk parish church.
- 17 May 1829: Mary Tudor, d/o John (blacksmith) and Pheobe of Pentre, Penyclawdd, baptised at Chirk parish church.
and, probably:
- 1867 Q2: John Tudor, died in Wrexham, age 67, Wrexham 11b 225
So perhaps Mary was a couple of years older than she claimed!
I can see a possibility for John Tudor in 1851:
1851 census - Minera [HO107/2503/722/7]
John Tudor, Lodger, married, 50, Blacksmith, Ellesmere
(but no sign of a wife)
I can't find the family in Chirk parish in the 1841 census and if they were living in Ruabon parish, or even in Wrexham parish, in 1841 then you will not be able to trace them as these censuses are missing!
The 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses for William and Mary Pearce seem to fit together:
1861 census - Dalton [RG9/3170/82/16]
1871 census - Pontybodkin [RG10/3738/9/11]
1881 census - Madeley [RG11/2701/111/15]
but I can't see any after that.
However, the 1871 census claims that the children were born in Leeswood!!!
There is a possibility that William is living on Abenbury on Wrexham in 1851?

Newbridge is southwest of Wrexham. Southsea is near Brymbo, Sarah's birth certificate just gives the address as Southsea! Very helpful.

I will happily look up the Parish records for you, but I'm a little confused as to where these places are!
For instance, Genuki states that Southsea parish was created in 1921, so do I look up Glan yr Afon?
Also, where exactly is Newbridge? The reason I went for Pentrobin earlier is that I found a few local addresses near Hawarden which looked similar.
I'm sure the archives staff will be helpful, but if you could clarify exactly what and where you want to look up, it would be easier.

Thank you for the reply, I have found these families in the census. I got a copy of the marriage certificate, which gives Mary's father's occupation as blacksmith. The story told in the family is that Mary was disowned by her family because she married beneath her. I have almost given up on this part of the family because despite posting messages on this site, and others I have never had contact from anyone. I know for certain that my grandmother, Sarah Pearce had a brother William, also born in Southsea, and a sister called Mary Ann, born in Barrow in Furness. I have since found census records for Dalton (which is virtually part of Barrow) which makes me think it is the same family with more children. It gives all their birthplaces as Wales!
I really would be grateful if you could look up parish records for me, I think this is going to be the only way I can track these people down, the records of baptisms of Sarah born 1870 and William born about 1862 would be very helpful. They were both born in Southsea. Mary Tudor was born in Newbridge and even now it doesn't appear to be very big, so in the 1830's it must have virtually just the one street.

The 1841 census shows the following family living at Pentrobin, Hawarden.
Samuel Tudor 40
Charlotte Tudor 35
Elizabeth Tudor 11
Mary Tudor 9
Ann Tudor 7
Samuel Tudor 6
Thomas Tudor 1
Thomas Tudor 70
Reference: Class: HO107; Piece 1409; Book: 12; Civil Parish: Hawarden; County: Flintshire; Enumeration District: 12A; Folio: 5; Page: 9
There is another Tudor family at Pentrobin ( father William) but in this one mary is 15 years old, so as this is 1841, she could be up to 19 yrs old.
Also, NorthWalesBMD shows a marriage between a Mary Tudor and (probably, as there are 2 marriages on each page) William Pierce at Mold, St Mary's in 1850. (Registers at Mold Ref: C/16/2/27)
You should be able to find this marriage in the Parish Records at the archives at Hawarden. Hopefully this would give you Mary's father and then a link to the census family.
If you cannot make it to Hawarden, let me know as I shall be going there myself within the next few weeks.
