Subject: Holly Lodge School
Sorry for the dreadful delay in replying to you, but I was waiting for a visit from Miss Catherine Martineau, an ex-pupil, ex-member of staff and now organiser of our Old Howellian museum.
According to Miss Henley at Maes Elwy Nursing Home (aged 93) who was on Howell's Staff c. 1935 - 77 Holly Lodge was evacuated to Denbigh and Howell's School in 1940, but it was only a temporary arrangement for a few weeks because plans were already underway for Guernsey Ladies College to share Howell's School's classrooms: they came 1940 - 45.
Holly Lodge, like Guernsey Ladies College after them, used classrooms only and had lodgings in Denbigh. Neither school mixed with Howell's girls (except for the occasional Sixth Form specialist subject lesson), presumably due to the risk of picking up infectious diseases - quarantine rules were very strict in boarding schools, before the days of widespread innoculations.
Miss Henley said that the younger staff like herself, tended to take very little notice of the temporary visit of Holly Lodge, because they were itching to go and join H.M. Forces, but were not allowed to do so. Teaching was considered a 'restricted' (or 'protected') occupation, so they were barred or dissauded from 'joining up" - consequently feelings of frustration were widespread!
Where Holly Lodge found alternative accommodation, Miss Henley has no idea.
I hope this is of some help and once again I apologise for the delay, but Miss Martineau who was actually a pupil when Guernsey Ladies College were here, could not remember Holly Lodge coming, so she must have joined the school very soon after.

Hello, I am trying to find the families of a Evan Williams & his wife Mary Jane Davies.
Evan was age 29 on his marriage certificate in 1883 he was living at Bwlchgwyn & his fathers name was John Williams and both worked as a Collier,
Mary Jane Davies was age 22 but I do have a birth date for her 8 Jan 1865, Wrexham, her fathers name was John Davies he to worked as a collier, her mothers name was a Hannah Roberts they were married in 1862, they were living at the time of their marriage in Brymbo, Hannah's fathers name was a Ezra Roberts & John's father was also named John but he worked as a Blacksmith.
Can anybody help me with these families, do anyone have any information on Blacksmiths that worked up in that area.
There are quite a few Evan Williams with a father named John, so I do know how difficult it is to find someone.
I appreciate any help anyone can offer me.
Thank you very much
Rhiannon

Hi again Michael
Have had a look at the Wrexham marriage - don't think it is your Patrick, as the others on the page are:
GRIFFITHS Harriet Ann
HUMPHREYS Thomas
WILLIAMS Elizabeth
Also cannot find a suitably aged Patrick on the 1891 Wales - as he would have been 24/25, might he have been serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers by then? (In case you haven't found it already, the RWF have their own website at www.rwfnet.co.uk.).
Sorry I can't be more help - maybe someone else will have more joy?

Subject: Re: [STS] 1881 Census Images
Both families were located and the images were sent today off-list to Nigel.
The problem with the Ancestry.com website is NOT that the images are not
there--they are--but that they are not properly indexed. The EDs are
missing from the index, so there is no way for the software to access the
proper page. For example, the RILEY family in Nigel's request is on page 26
in Bilston; the problem is that it is in ED 26, and there are 30 EDs for
Bilston, more than one of which contains a page 26.
The search technique, therefore, is this:
1. call up the 1881 census;
2. select Staffordshire;
3. select Bilston;
4. select the first ED and check for a page 26; then
5. repeat step 4 until the desired family is found.
Finally, be sure to make a note of the ED and use that as part of your
documentation, because without the ED, the reference data are NOT
NECESSARILY unique.

Thats all amazing!! All that was in the Sion records? Is there a way I can
buy a copy, or do I have to go to one of the record offices?
Thomas Jones is my Great Great Great Great Uncle. I knew he moved to
Frongoch between 1851 and 1871 from the census entries. He married Miriam
Evans, and had at least two children. But any info would be great!
My direct ancestors all stayed at Bryntirion. Thomas Jones' brother, Aenneas
Jones (b. 1831 Bryneglwys) is my Great Great Great Grandfather. He married
Mary (b. 1836 - don't know her maiden name), and they had a son David Jones
(b. 1860). David married the housekeeper - Mary Jane Edwards (b. 1870
Llanelidan) - on 16 May 1892 in Llangollen, I think Aenneas had died
sometime in 1891-1901 probably before the wedding. They had three children:
Mary Elizabeth Jones (b. 1893 Bryneglwys), Edith Catherine Jones (b. 1897)
and Hilda Jones (b.?). Mary Elizabeth Jones married Evan Hugh Griffith (b.
1891 Saron Village, Caernarfonshire). She then lef the family home,
Bryntirion, and lived with Evan Hugh in Birkenhead where he was working as a
bus conductor. She then moved back to Bryntirion to give birth to their only
child, David Alun Griffith (b. 1921) then she went back to Birkenhead where
she died in 1927. David Alun Griffith is my taid, but died in 1977, before I
was born so I didn't know him.
That is the route from John Jones (b. 1790s) through to me. When the family
moved from Bryntirion I am told "they burnt all their medical books", I
can't imagine the information held in those. We have no idea why they burnt
them.
The Elizabeth Jones you mention in the first bullet point is a new relative
to me, as is the David Jones. I guess the Jane Jones in the second bullet
point is my 5xGreat Grandmother?
There was a list member from Canada had emailed me alot of info, luckily I
saved the Word file, but my computer packed up last weekend and I lost her
email address. But any information you have is valuable! You have taken me
back to another grandmother, and new uncles and aunts!
Many thanks!
Jonathan

Hello, I was wondering if anyone have these names in their family tree,
In 1862 I have a marriage certificate of a John Davies who was 23 years old at the time & he came from Brymbo his father was also called John & worked as a Blacksmith, John ( junior ) was marring a Hannah Roberts age 21 also from Brymbo & her fathers name was Ezra Roberts & he worked as a collier, do anyone know about the John Davies that worked as a Blacksmith ?
The other is John Davies's daughter Mary Jane Davies age 22 & came from Bwlchgwyn, in 1883 she married a Evan Williams also from Bwlchgwyn who's father was a John Williams both worked as a collier.
Can anyone help me to find them on any of the census as well, I will be very grateful for anything anyone can offer me.
Thank you very much
Rhiannon
I have tried and now I to ask for help for someone else. I am trying to find
a William OLLERHEAD in the 1891 census. He was born in Wrexham in 1831,
therefore he should be aged 59 / 60 (which is confirmed by the census in
1901, 1881, 1871 and 1861). He is a baker / confectioner by trade. I think
he will be listed as married, but his wife and children are in Oswestry - I
think he has been separated from the family for at least twenty years. He is
probably listed as a Boarder or Lodger. He dies in Wrexham aged 75 in 1905.
In 1901 he is to be found in Holt Road, Biston, Wrexham. In 1881 he is to be
found in Red Lion Street, Towyn.
I have looked via Ancestry, using different combinations and spellings of
his surname - but I cannot find him. Is there a 1891 census available that
can be searched by occupation - I cannot do this via Ancestry and I would be
very interested to see all bakers or confectioners
Any help as always would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Does anyone know of a Mary Jones b. 1830 in Anglesey, married 1851 in
Llanfyllin?
I am looking for a JONES family in Llanfyllin in 1851, possibly there
also in 1841, father perhaps a seaman. Mary Jones was b. Anglesey, but
other children may also have been born on Anglesey before the move to
Llanfyllin. Unfortunately I do not know the name of Mary Jones parents
but hope to connect to another Jones family in Llanfyllin.
Her husband was John Williams, b. 1822 Llanddulas, Denb., son of John &
Mary Williams.
In 1851 census (Liverpool), Mary Jones (now Mrs. John Williams) said
that she was born in 1830 in Anglesey. According to the free BMD
website, a John Williams married a Mary Jones in Llanfyllin,
Montgomeryshire in March 1851 (recorded). I think these John Williams
are one and the same and that his wife Mary Jones came originally from
Anglesey. Their only child was named Mary Jane--John Williams' mother
was a Mary and perhaps Jane was the name of the wife's mother.
In May 1852, a seaman John Williams and wife Mary Jones had a daughter
(Mary Jane Williams, my great grandmother) in Liverpool. By 1861 Mary
Jones Williams as died and apparently John and his little daughter moved
to Amlwch, Anglesey, where John Williams remarried, to a Mary Griffith
(b.abt. 1827, Amlwch). John Williams died in March 1879 when his ship
was lost at sea (between the 1871 and 1881 census reports). By 1881 Mary
(Griffith)Williams was a widow living in Amlwch with the children of John
Williams (John G., William, and Thomas R.).
1851 Liverpool Census.
John Williams, 28, master mariner, Llanddulas, Denbighshire (b.1823)
Mary, 21, wife, Anglesey (b.1830)
Elizabeth, sister to head of house, 15, scholar, Denbigh.

My Great Great Grandmother - Mary Jane Humpreys - was born in April 1853. The family bible says that she was born on 15th April 1853, and her birth certificate says she was born on 14th April 1853. Does anyone have any ideas how I can verify either date as being genuine?
I know its only one day difference, but the small details make the bigger picture.
Her parents (according to the certificate) were John and Elizabeth Humphreys (nee Jones). John was a Shoemaker, both born in Northop, Flintshire.
Many thanks,
Jonathan
After seven years as Administrator of the Clwyd, Wls-Denbighshire and
Wls-Flintshire Rootsweb mailing lists Vic Roberts has decided that it is
time to hand the reigns over to somebody else. Everybody with an interest in
Family History in north Wales will appreciate how busy Vic is with many
projects such as Clwyd FHS, North Wales BMD and the North Wales FH Fair and
will appreciate why he has decided to lighten his load a little bit by
relinquishing the list administration duties.
Vic will remain a member of the lists and we will continue to benefit from
his wisdom and expertise through his list membership.
As from today I will be taking over the duties as list administrator for
Clwyd, Wls-Denbighshire and Wls Flintshire, which I will be adding to my
current responsibilities for the lists that cover Gwynedd and the three old
counties of north west Wales. From the list membership point of view there
will be little difference in the way that the lists are run – the “rules and
regulations”, as few as they are, will remain the same and I hope to
maintain the friendly and helpful ethos that lists have had since their
inception.
I'm sure that all list members will want to join me in thanking Vic for the
work that he has done to make these lists such a resounding success over the
past seven years and to wish him all the best with the terrific amount of
work that he will continue to do for family historians through his other
projects and responsibilities.
