Kate,
Thanks for your help. That looks likely to be the right David DAVIES,
despite him only aging 4 years between 1851 and 1861!
However, the lack of Mary DAVIES does not tie up with what I have already
found:
On the 1901 census she is Mary ATKIN in Battle, aged 41. This is the
correct family as I have other confirmation of the children recorded there.
On her marriage cert to Arthur James ATKIN on 15 Aug 1883 in Llandefaelog
Fach she is 23. Her father is recorded as David DAVIES, a schoolmaster.
I have also found a Mary DAVIES on the 1881 census, aged 21, working as a
servant to Rev William Williams in the Rectory, Llandefaelog Fach. I am
sure this is the same person as Rev William Williams conducted the marriage
in 1883.
So, this info corresponds and points to her being born in 1860 in Battle.
The latest date she could have been born was April 1860, otherwise her age
would be incorrect on all the other sources
Where was she in 1861?
I guess I'll have to try to locate her birth - although there are several
Mary Davies (a popular name it seems) born in Brecon in 1860, so I don't
want to buy all the certificates until I can narrow it down.
Any more ideas of the best route to go would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon

Subject: Re: 1861, 1871, 1891 Census lookup
Hi folks!
Simon Atkin <satkin(a)dbgroup.co.uk> asked:
<<
Could sks please lookup the following in the 1861 & 1871 census for me in
Battle or Llandefaelog Fach:
Mary DAVIES b1860 in Battle.
Her father was David DAVIES, a schoolmaster.
Could sks try the 1891 census for Battle or Llandefaelog Fach under her
married name of ATKIN.
She married Arthur James ATKIN in 1883 in Llandefaelog Fach.
I have them in Battle from the 1901 census.
>
It looks as though Mary hadn't been born by the time of the 1861 Census, but
below is the family of David DAVIES, a schoolmaster in Battle, in the 1851 &
1861 Censuses.
Hope this helps!
x Kate.
