Hello.
I have recently joined this list.
My link with Breconshire is that two of my great, great grandparents
(George Frederick COLLIER and Marion JONES) were married on 18 October
1820 at Llansantffraed church.
The Powys County Archives Office have informed me that the entry in the
Parish Marriage Register reads as follows:
George Frederick Collier of the Parish of Saint Clement Danes, in the
County of Middlesex and, Marion Jones of this parish, by license
Witnessed by John Jones, Catherine Jones, Mary Jones, Charles Jones and
Thomas Watkins.
The marriage was performed by Richard Davies, the Archdeacon of Brecon.
The County Archives Office suggested that this means that it was a large
affair.
Although I already knew something about George Frederick Collier I knew
nothing about the link with Brecon until, quite by chance, I found that
the marriage had been included in the marriage column of the
Staffordshire Advertiser (28 October 1820). This entry provides a
little more information about Marion. It states that she was the second
daughter of John Jones Esq. of Skethrog (sic) House, near Brecon.
I have received some information about Scethrog House from the County
Librarian at LLandrindod Wells. This includes a copy of a Tithe Map and
schedule extract dated 1845 which records the property (then comprising
the house, garden and orchard) being in the ownership of the trustees of
John Jones. At that time it was occupied by a merchant named Harry
HUMFREY/HAMFREY (the name is not very clear on the photocopies of the
Tithe Map schedule or the 1841 census entry for the property which the
County Librarian also supplied). I have yet to follow up the
Librarian's suggestion that I should contact the Powys Archives Office
again with a view to establishing the availability of any additional
information such as Enclosure Awards.
I would be pleased to hear from anyone having information concerning any
of the above mentioned people. I would also be pleased to have views as
to whether I would be correct in assuming that the fact that the House
was owned by the trustees of John Jones in 1845, and that neither he nor
members of his family were at the house when the 1841 Census was
conducted indicates that he had died before 6/7 June of that year. If
so, is there a kind lister in the area who is able to help me with an
approximate date of his death please? Does anyone reading this know
anything about other members of the family please?
Thank you in advance for any information/help/ideas you may have.
PS I will be copying this to the Powys list as I have yet to see any
activity on this one. Naturally, I will continue to subscribe to both.
Best wishes from South London.
