Hiya Coz!
Well, I've got an unsent personal email to the Williams Four in my outbox,
and checking list mail, I see there's something on here to chat about, too!
Firstly, this is a very quiet list.
You might find more responses on the main Powys mailing list, which covers
the old counties of Breconshire, Radnorshire, & Montgomeryshire (BRE, RAD &
MGY). Whilst there's more traffic on that list than this, it's still much
quieter than Glamorgan!
Also, for the Rassau, the Blaenau Gwent mailing list is quite good, having a
few helful locals on board, as well as people descended from Rassau folk.
In simple terms, a lime burner did just that - he burned limestone.
However, its difficult to know what the burnt lime was then used for. After
limestone was extracted, it could be burned, to give a white chalk that was
easier to crush. The burnt, crushed lime might be added to water, to make
white-wash with which to paint houses, or perhaps the burnt lime was used in
an industrial process. I know that limestone was used in the steel-making
process, but I don't know much about that - even whether the lime was burned
before usage.
I haven't been able to find the location of Kelly's Cottage. In the 1851
Census, there are two households in 'Kely Row' in Upper Rassau, inhabited by
GWILLIM & DAVIES families. Since the next cottage enumerated, is the
household of our common ancestors William PRICE & Sarah, nee MEREDITH, who
seem to have shared a resting place in Carmeltown Independent Congregational
Chapel's graveyard with Margaret PARRY nee HOWELLS, and whose son, Thomas
PRICE, married Mary PARRY, daughter of Howell PARRY & Margaret, this would
seem to be the right address for Kelly's Cottage. Unfortunately, I can't
narrow it down any further than one of a group of twenty-odd houses on a
map.
Margaret's husband Howell PARRY was at the Crickhowell Union Workhouse in
LLangattock Village when he died. The Crickhowell Union Workhouse covered
the parishes of Crickhowell, LLangatwg (LLangattock), LLangynidr, LLanelly &
LLanfihangel Cwm-du. I don't know what records still exist for Crickhowell
Union Workhouse, but perhaps somebody else on this list or the Powys list
could provide some information in that respect.
Margaret was born just before the earliest existing records for LLangattock
Parish, and was married before civil registration came in, in 1837. Your
best bet for finding her parentage, is to try to find her marriage to Howell
PARRY in local Church records, which should at least provide her father's
name. I know that some of our cousins have information from old family
bibles - do you know whether this information was detailed enough to state
the names of the Chapel or Church used by the family at that time?
Here comes the rain again! Sorry I can't help any further with this stuff.
x Kate.
