Dear All,
Despite having researched my roots nearly all over Wales for the past few
years, I've never had any dealings with Brecon. In fact my own personal
knowledge of Brecon is next to nothing, coming from near Llandudno.
However, I do recognise a few names from other lists, so I know I'm in good
company.
So, now to introduce my newly discovered Brecon Roots. I have 2 separate
families, both named DAVIES.
The first starts with Evan Davies, b: 1809 in Builth. He was a Stonemason
and married Christiana Unknown b 1809 in Yatton Somerset.
Their children were:
 Christiana Davies, b.: 1831 in Brecon, St John
 Rees Davies, b: 1835 in Brecon, St John
 Mary Davies, b.: 1838 in Brecon, St John
 Emma Davies, b.: 1841 in Brecon, St John
 Evan Davies, b.: 1844)in Brecon, St John
 Mary Davies, b.: 1848)in Aberdare
Some time between 1844 and 1848 the family moved from Brecon to Aberdare,
where they lived in Abergwawr. I have not been able to follow their trail
after 1851, except the daughter Christiana.
I have not been able to identify Evan's parents nor christening, nor how he
managed to find a wife from Somerset.
The second Davies family:
Walter Davies was born in 1830 in Llywel Breconshire. He married Ann
Griffiths(b.:1831 in Merthyr Cynog, Brecon). Walter and Ann had 7 children:
 David Davies, b 1853 in Brecon St Davids
 Thomas Davies b: 1855 in Brecon St Davids
 John Davies b 1857 in Brecon St Davids
 Gwen Davies b 1860 in Brecon St Davids
 Mary Ann Davies b 1862 in Brecon St Davids
 Walter Davies b 1864 in Brecon St Davids
 Evan Davies b 1869 in Brecon St Davids
Walter was an agicultural labourer. The family lived at Pen y Lan in Brecon,
St. Davids. Walter died in the March quarter of 1869, aged 39.
Ann then worked as a charwoman and laundress to bring up the 4 children who
were still at home. By 1881 all the children had left home. Ann was living
in 11, Silver St. Brecon. She was however not alone, as her niece, Catherine
Harvard had moved in. Ann probably died before 1891 as there is no sign of
her in the census of that year.
I have not yet been able to identify Walters nor Anns parents.
David Davies, son of Walter Davies and Ann Unknown was born in 1853 in
Brecon. By 1881 he had left home and was lodging in Merthyr Tydfil, together
with his brother, Walter. He was working as a coal miner. David married Emma
Williams in the June quarter of 1881, in Merthyr. They had 7 children, one
of whom, Emma was my great grandmother.
Bit of a long posting, but thats most of what I have at the moment. I have
followed by direct ancestors throughout the various census, with one or two
gaps, but I'd like to fill out the rest as well. And of course draw on
expert local knowledge of the area.
Thanks for bearing with me and I'll be posting a couple of queries before
too long.
Hwyl,
Dewi
