Hi Listers and Tricia,
Sorry if my last message was a little terse. I was actually, in my
thoughts, sitting, aged about 14years in our Geography class in Cyfartha
Castle Grammar School, Merthyr Tydfil. Miss Lewis [a most wonderful woman
whom we all loved and respected] had just told us most emphatically that
Merthyr Tydfil, and Glamorgan ended at Cefn Coed bridge, which was after
all, almost at the end of Cyfartha Castle Park. That is how I knew. Nice
to pass on some of Miss Lewis' teaching.
Cheers Jill

If you go to
http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/bre.htm then click on
Merthry Tydfil it gives the information that a small part of it was in
Breconshire. From that information I then had another look and sure enough
it shows Pendryn as being part of Merthyr Tydfil.

Dear Tricia,
Jill Muir's statement was correct.
The webpage to which you refer comprises a list of Registration Districts
and the areas they covered.
The list indicates that the 'Merthyr Tydfil Registration District' included
parts of Penderyn and Vaynor, both of which are in the county of
Breconshire.
The significance of this information is that births, marriages, and deaths
which took place in Penderyn and Vaynor would have been recorded in the
Merthyr Tydfil BMD registers. And because registration districts generally
coincide with census districts, census entries for Penderyn and Vaynor would
be found in the census records for Merthyr Tydfil census district.
Neither of the above statements mean that the town of Merthyr Tydfil was in
Breconshire; nor do they mean that the ecclesiastical parish of Methyr
Tydfil was in Breconshire. The town and parish were in Glamorgan.
Under the heading 'Description and Travel', on the Merthyr Tydfil page of
the GENUKI website, you'll find a list of the places, villages, farms, etc.,
that were in Merthyr Tydfil parish. To see the list, go to:

Kind regards,
John
