<<We are considering buying the cdrom of the 1851 census for Brecknock. Can
anyone tell us if:-
(a) it is indexed>>
yes
<<(b) it is digitised or a copy of the microfilm>>
neither
<<(c) it is possible to make print-outs>>
yes
It is an Indexed transcription of the 1851 Breconshire Census, in two
sections.
The first section is an A-Z index, with a separate html page for surnames
beginning with each different letter of the alphabet.
The other section is a transcription of the census 'as enumerated'. Except
in unusual (that is, wordy) circumstances, nothing from the census is
omitted, unlike CDs from some FHSs, which are reduced indices. If anything
is intentionally omitted, the transcription has a sign to tell you there is
more to be found on the original census.
There are no actual census images.
The CD is a transcription that acts as a handy reference to the Census
images you will find elsewhere (bought from the PRO, viewed at a Library or
LDS Family History Centre, etc, or hopefully in the near future, bought on
CD from Rod Neep's Archive CD Books).
Everything on the CD is plain text on html pages, so there is absolutely no
problem printing off any of the information. It is simple to copy and paste
the information into whatever text program you prefer to use, and with a
little cleaning up, its simple enough to save the information as a .csv
document with textpad or notepad, which can then be read by your preferred
spreadsheet or database program.
There is no superfluous software cluttering up the CD, and nothing that
clashes with your operating system, unlike the Census CDs for a neighbouring
county (much effort into a nice try, folks, but no biscuits ;-~ )
I have a few Census or Census Index CDs from various Family History
Societies now, and the Powys FHS ones are definitely my favourite so far.
I'm definitely had my money's worth out of them, over & over again - but
then, about three quarters of my ancestors were in Breconshire during the
C19th!
Taking an example from the start of the Index ...

With the Glamorgan Parishes, the references are the Folio & Schedule Numbers

If we follow the references given after each entry, we find the following
households in the 'As enumerated' sections:

If you buy any of the Powys FHS Census CDs, you won't regret it.
Hope this helps!
