Hello all,
The 1861-1881 census returns in Bedwellty indicate that a Hannah Rees was born (I know the
term can be interpreted very loosely) in three different places--in Beaufort, Llangynidr,
and Bedwellty. I guess I will have to search records in all three places. I have a few
questions regarding these places.
1. On the census, would birth place normally indicate a town/hamlet or the broader
parish? Example--If it said Llangynidr, would that mean the parish or the actual town?
2. I have found references to Beaufort in both Monmouthshire and Breconshire counties.
Does anyone know a history of Beaufort in regards to which district/sub-district it has
belonged to through the years? I also have the same question about Llangynidr. Below I
have a chart with information I have gleaned from the Internet. Is this correct? I'm
especially interested in being able to search records from 1860 and earlier (especially
the 1841/51 census).
Place Sub-District District County
Beaufort Aberystruth Bedwelty Monmouthshire
Beaufort Llangattock Crickhowell Breconshire
Llangynidr Llangynidr Crickhowell Breconshire
3. How many miles are between the towns of Llangynidr, Beaufort, Bedwelty, and
Mynyddyslwyn?
Thanks so much for your help,
Melanie Tucker
