Does anyone know of any programmes which will convert GEDCOM files into
a spreadsheet (Excel) format or basic text files?
Why? Basically I don't use any genealogy formatting programmes as I use
Excel the manually convert/format the information into HTML
=======================
Dear Steve,
GEDCOM files are simple text files which can be opened in any text
reader such as Windows Notepad. With perseverence, details about
individuals can be read directly in Notepad, but you need a genealogy
program to interpret the relationships between individuals and to
extract family groups.
Copied below is a typical example of individual information in a GEDCOM
file:
0 @I187@ INDI
1 NAME Thomas /BAYNHAM/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE ABT 1835
2 PLAC Old Radnor, Radnorshire
2 SOUR @S4@
1 DEAT
2 DATE 18 MAY 1913
2 PLAC Old Radnor, Radnorshire
2 SOUR @S2@
1 EVEN
2 DATE MAY 1913
2 PLAC St Stephen's Church, Old Radnor
2 SOUR @S18@
1 OCCU
2 PLAC Tailor
2 SOUR @S15@
1 RESI
2 DATE APR 1881
2 PLAC Dolyhir Crossing, Radnorshire
2 SOUR @S4@
1 FAMC @F121@
1 FAMS @F3@
The alphanumeric code enclosed between "@" symbols is used to define the
relational links between different individuals
The latest version of GEDCOM is version 5. I have a technical document
describing GEDCOM 5 in detail which I can send to you off list if you
wish.
Kind regards,
John
