Dear Lists,
Further to John Ball's cross-posting last week regarding the online index to "The
Cambrian", I'd like to add that your interests need not extend to Swansea and S.
Wales to benefit from the items in "The Cambrian". I've spent some hours
using the index and found hundreds of entries pertaining to other counties, including
Montgomeryshire and Cardiganshire (which happen to be my own centers of interest) --
simply using those words for search criteria.
One word of caution -- I generalized my search criteria to the county names because of the
incredible array of erroneous spellings of specific place-names, parishes, etc. I did
notice that *most* of the notices of births/marriages/deaths pertain to fairly prominent
families or the clergy but occasionally dealt with simple people -- sometimes just because
someone had reached an extremely advanced age (over 100) when they died. There are also
many notices of sales at auction of various farms, cottages, etc., that could prove
interesting if one followed up and obtained a copy of the entire notice as many named the
current tenants of such properties and the annual rent.
Anyway, well worth having a look!

Subject: [WLS-BRE] 'The Cambrian' index on-line (cross-posting)
Hello Listers,
Any of you with interests that extend into the Swansea area of south Wales
might like to know that a wonderful new resource came on-line a few days
ago.
A searchable index to 'The Cambrian' newspaper is available at
http://www.swansea.gov.uk/cambrian/
I quote extracts from the relevant website, hosted by the City and County of
Swansea:
--------------------
The Cambrian was first English language newspaper to be published in Wales,
running from 1804 - 1930.
Swansea Library Service is proud to announce that a computerised index to
the contents of the newspaper is now freely available...
The Cambrian Index database can be searched for any word, most often a
personal or place name. It can also be used to identify types of events or
reports of occurrences e.g. mining accidents, bankruptcies, meetings of
societies, opening of buildings, crime reports etc.
The Index entries take the form of brief precis of the original newspaper
article, including the most important information, such as name and subject
matter. In many cases, it has been possible to include the page number on
which the article can be found in the original newspaper, useful when
subsequently photocopying.
---------------------
The entries include birth, marriage, and death announcements.
Kind regards,
John
