After some discussion about this location just outside Rassau, which seems
to have switched counties numerous times (and, given the government's
predilection for messing around with Welsh counties, seems likely to
continue doing so for the forseeable future), it seems likely that it got
included in the Llangynidr subdistrict of Crickhowell for the 1871 census.
This is borne out by the fact that three birth certificates of children born
in in Rassau/Beaufort Wells in the period 1870-1877 were issued by the
Crickhowell office, Llangynidr subdistrict.
I wonder if SKS who happens to find themselves in the Crickhowell office
could either a) confirm that this village is included in Brecon in 1871
census or, even better b) actually look up the family which should consist
of John (or John Charles, or Charles) VAUGHAN, railway worker (plate layer?)
b. Goitre, Mon, possibly his first wife Mary Ann (depending on whether she
died before or after the census), and two children Charles Henry and
Elizabeth (my g-gm). I could make great use of this info, first to find out
Mary Ann's age and place of birth and secondly to get yet another read on
John VAUGHAN's year of birth which, so far, has been indicated as being
either 1839, 1843, 1844, 1847 or 1848 depending on which source you go with!
Many many thanks
