I have recently searched, separately, the 1841 census of the Llangynidr and
Hay areas of Breconshire at the FHC of the LDS. Although the 1841 census is
famed for the writing having faded there are still parts of it that are
legible. Llangynidr is the better of the two.
It is probably worth while searching this census.
Best of luck.
John

Hi Anita,
<<Also, what does the term "Cum De" refer to?>>
"Cum De" would be the phonetic spelling of "Cwm Ddu".
The village itself appears on the following map as Cwmdu:

Your ancestors probably told people where they were from, but by the time
the name got to paper, the person who could write, couldn't speak Welsh.
This is a particularly common stumbling block, and even affects those of
us
still here in Wales! Just to make life that little bit more
interesting,
it seems, the parish and county boundaries can sometimes be as fluidic as
the spellings ;-)
County: Breconshire
Civil Registration District: Crickhowell
Sub-District: Cwm Ddu
[NB: Crucywel is the Welsh spelling of Crickhowell, and is used on some of
the databases and indices you might need to access.]
1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 & 1891 Censuses use the same geographical units,
though I'm not sure about the 1841 & 1901 Census records. These are all
held on microfilm and microfiche at:
Brecon Library, Ship Street, Brecon, Powys, LD3 9AE
Tel: 44(0) 1874 623346 e-mail: breclib(a)mail.powys.gov.uk
If anyone else could point out ways to access this information without
being physically present in Brecon, I'd be just as pleased to find out as
yourself, I should think, as I'll soon be looking for the Llangunider,
Crickhowell, Breconshire records.
Hope this helps you on your way!
Kate.
