Dear List,
I have received a copy of the 1851 census entry for my ancestress Ann Harris. She was born
in Garndiffaith, Trevethin in June 1839, daughter of James HARRIS and Margaret Harris, nee
BEVAN. In 1851, she was living in High Street, Blaina (Mon.) as 'cousin' to the
head of the household. His name was Walter Bevan, aged 35 (born circa 1816). It seems that
he was Ann's uncle (brother of Margaret Bevan who was married in Llanwenarth (Mon.) in
1836 so born in about 1814. Obviously, cousin and niece passed for the same in these times
when such relationships were less clearly defined. Walter and his wife were born in
Llanbedr in Breconshire which is obviously the village in the parish of Llanbedr Ystrad
Yw. It seems almost certain therefore that Margaret Bevan was also born there and hence
baptised in the parish church. I do not know where James and Margaret Harris were in 1851
or even if they were alive (why else would Ann have been living with her uncle?). If
anyone has any informat!
ion about any BEVAN families of Llanbedr I would love to hear from them. Many thanks in
anticipation!
Best wishes
James Phillips-Evans
