Good morning listers,
Having just subscribed yesterday, I thought I would post my first message
by telling you that I just recently "discovered" a few ancestors from the
Breconshire area.
There are connections in Breconshire to my other family(HUGHES) in
Bedwellty, Rhymney, Monmouthshire through the late 1700s and 1800s.
I have one :
HOWELL DAVIES
Place of birth: Merthyr Cynog.
Birth year: (Either) 1817 or 1818
I also have :
WATKIN MORRIS
(about whom I know nothing more than he was in Breconshire)
Some of the above intermarriages were in Crickhowell as well, so I feel
that , through further "digging" I shall be able to really solidify that
Breconshire connection.
I am wondering if anyone our there would be able to suggest sources I might
contact to find birth, baptism, census, etc. to find these persons....I am
a novice in researching this area.
I am in your deepest debt and look forward to getting to know my new
Breconshire "listers".....
Jerri in Minnesota, USA
Hello
Could you please forward the following to your list if you feel that it
is appropriate.
Many thanks
Best wishes
Kim
Hello Everyone
This email has been forwarded with the kind permission of the listowner
and is to let you all know that the UK Schools History website is
finally back on line. Some of you may remember the old site which went
down in 2001 and you will find that the new one will follow exactly the
same principals in that I will be collecting as many photographs as
possible of school buildings from around the UK and as much historical
information as possible to accompany them. The new site will differ
slightly to the old one in that I am now able to accept information
connected to a school even if you don't have a photograph available at
present. And this time you won't have to wait for a full page of
photographs to download to be able to view the ones that you are looking
for.
I'm sure with that if I receive half as much support as I did last time
then the new site will be a great success and hopefully a valuable
resource for everyone.
Please send any photographs/information that you have to
kim.bewick(a)ntlworld.com. And to view the site please follow the link
below.
Very Best wishes
Kim

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales', just uploaded onto my
website, includes:
1. The curiously named "Ragged School" in Swansea, Glamorgan. This
feature was first shown on 'Images of Wales' in August 1998 (two
photos).
2. A miscellany of graves and tombstones, photographed in various church
and chapel burial yards in Breconshire, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, and
Pembrokeshire - first shown on 'Images of Wales' in July 1998 (eight
photos).

Hello,
I too am researching the Llanelly area. My 3rd great grandparents:
Thomas GRIFFITHS married Mary JENKINS on 4 Dec 1852 at Llanelly. I did
get the marriage certificate from the GRO and it is in the Crickhowell
District.
Here is what it said as best as I can read it:
> Thomas Griffiths, age 27, bachelor, laborer of The Vro Llamputer, son
> of Thomas Griffiths, husbandsman married 4 Dec 1852 at the Baptists'
> Bethlehem Chapel, Llanelly in the District of Crickhowell in the
> County of Brecon, Mary Jenkins, age 25, spinster, of Wambutten
> Llangency, daughter of Thomas Jenkins, a husbandsman.
I found them on the census of 1860 in Brecon and 1870 in Swansea, Wales,
as they had moved. They had the following children:
Elizabeth GRIFFITHS born abt 1853 Llangattock, Brecon
Annie GRIFFITHS born 17 Aug 1855 Llangattock, Crickhowell, Brecon
Mary GRIFFITHS born about 1858 Llangattock, Brecon
Thomas GRIFFITHS born about 1860 Llangattock, Brecon
William GRIFFITHS born 18 Aug 1861 Llansamlet, Glamorgan
Sarah GRIFFITHS born abt 1869 Llansamlet, Glamorgan
William went to Belmont County, Ohio in the U.S.A. Annie married John
REES and went to Butte, Silver Bow, Montana. Mary married Evan REES and
went to Canton, Stark, Ohio. I don't know where the rest of them ended up?
I don't know any more beyond the fact that the fathers of Thomas
GRIFFITHS and Mary JENKINS were both named Thomas. If any of you figure
out how to find out more about the Llanelly area, please post it to the
list, because I am stumped at this point!
Thank you,
Shanna JONES

Hello to everyone
I am pleased to see the is someone else trying to do research in this area.
My g grandmother came from Brynmawr. Her parents were Joshua Davies b
Cardigan and Emma Davies b Llanelly, Brecon.
Emma b 04.10.1840, parents Benjamin and possibly Margaret.
Joshua and Emma m about 1859 and their first child was May Ellen (my g
grandmother). I wonder if the Ellen was name for the saint? She was
born in 1861
I found the information re Mary Ellen's birth in Tredegar (spelling?),
which is a little west of Brynmawr.
I have been trying for locate Emma d/o Ben and Margaret on the 1841 or
51, and a m for Ben and Margaret.
I would also like information on Joshua and Emma on the 1861. Mary
Ellen was born in October, so would not be on the census.
Does anyone have connections to, or information on these families?

The parish Church is St. Elli

Dear John et al.
Not wanting to make a controversial argument about this, but I read just
recently an article somewhere that St Elli of Llanelly Brecon was possibly
and even prabably a woman and not the same St Elly of Llanelly, Carms. A
Princess who jumped from a parapet into martydom because she wished to
become a Nun but was being forced to marry someone by her parents.
I will have to think hard where I read this.
Regards
John Jones

Hi Linda!
Llanelly is a parish in its own right. It was in the registration district
of Crickhowell which closed in 1974.
The registers were moved to the 'Brecknock' district located in Brecon.
You are correct in that Llanelly is just over 3½ miles from Bryn Mawr.
Cheers
Paul
