David, there are only between 20 and 25 dwellings listed in Church Street in
each of the censuses 1871 to 1911, irrespective of how they’re numbered. So
it’s extremely unlikely that a significant number might be ‘missing’ from
the 1881?
Since you know for certain that Robert Evans was living at the Eagles in
1891 I'd have thought it quite safe to assume that this was also his father
Thomas Evans’ residence in 1881, given that each had the same
near-neighbours in nailor Richard Williams and shoemaker William Griffith?

Thanks again, Gordon. I see what the problem is now; another renumbering so
the Eagles now appears to be number 49. The 1881 shows houses in Church
Street numbered 48 to 62. I wonder what happened to numbers 1 to 47!

It was originally numbered 15 later changed to 24 but in the 1881 there
does not appear to be any low numbered houses in Church Street.
David, I don’t think there are necessarily any households missing from the
1881 census - the enumerator patently commenced with 1 Llewellyn Street and
continued this sequence upwards through Chapel Street, Dinorben Square,
Church Street, Bangor Street, Tan yr Efail, Waterside, Bridge Street, Old
School Place and Tanyrardd, culminating in 135 Bragdy.
In 1891, when the Eagles is numbered 24 Church Street, near neighbours are
:-
22 Richard Williams, aged 70, nailor & painter, born Trefdraeth
23 William Griffith, aged 70, shoemaker, born Holyhead
24 Robert Evans, aged 35, farmer, born Aberffraw
25 Evan Hughes, aged 50, grocer, born Llanbeblig
In 1881, when no house is identified as the Eagles, and house-numbering is
questionable to say the least:-
48 William Griffith, aged 62, shoemaker, born Holyhead
49 Thomas Evans, aged 61, farmer, born Aberffraw
50 Richard Williams, aged 60, nailor, born Trefdraeth
In 1901, when again no building is identified as the Eagles, but strongly
suggesting that Thomas EVANS was living in the same house as in 1891 (and as
his father in 1881) :-
48 William Parry, aged 43, farm labourer, born Aberffraw
49 Robert Evans, aged 45, farm labourer, born Aberffraw
51 Richard Williams, aged 81, nailor, born Trefdraeth
We of course know from enumerator’s summary books that in 1911 the Eagles
was numbered 41 Church Street, with William Parry living at number 40.
Hope this might help dispel some of your doubts?
Best regards
Gordon

Thank you, Gordon, Aled and Dave for taking the time to find this
information. I must say that I feel defeated by this Evans family. Many
years ago I spent many hours in the Llangefni Record Office trying to
produce a family tree. Members of my family did visit a descendent in
Aberffraw, Gladys Williams nee Evans (born 1921). She claimed to be the last
Evans to live at the Eagles up until 1979 by which time it had not been a
public house for many years. She remembered earlier generations very clearly
including her grandfather. The problem is that the records show that the man
she referred to was her great grandfather and she had no recollection of her
real grandfather or anyone else of his generation. I came to the conclusion
that what was needed was the chapel records from the period. Unfortunately
neither the Llangefni Record Office or the National Library at Aberystwyth
have them and I have not been able to find where they are or what happened
to them.
Another problem is that the census records seem to be incomplete. For
example, in the 1881, I cannot find any house that is definitely the Eagles.
It was originally numbered 15 later changed to 24 but in the 1881 there does
not appear to be any low numbered houses in Church Street.
Thank you all again. I am just hoping that my visit to Anglesey this coming
weekend and my intended visit to see someone who is knowledgeable about
Aberffraw will produce some results.
