Lynn,
I saved your message to try to find the book mentioned in my local
library. Unfortunately, I need the exact title, I think. Do you know
it? I tried to contact you privately, but it bounced.
Thanks,
Betty Pace

Subject: [ANG] Madam Wens
Think I can elaborate some on Madame Wens... A writing I have obtained
only
refers to the author, title, that the version is an update by a
person called Bedwyr Lewis Jones of the original version by WD Owen (the
Welsh has been 'modernised'- strange that he's also called Bedwyr
eh!!).and
that the book was adapted into a film for S4C the Welsh language TV
channel
(S4C stands for 'Sianel Pedwar Cymru'- Welsh Channel Four).
Of interest to
you perhaps is the preface by Bedwyr Lewis Jones stating that it is a
fictional novel - but that he believes that it is partly based on actual
folklore that existed in this area many years before it was written (he
also states that Madam Wen's ghost is said to swim the Lake called Llyn
Traffwll (this is where its reputed that she hid in a cave, and its not
far
from Bryn Eithin)on Ester Sunday morning each year. It is his believes
that
it is partly based on actual
folklore that existed in this area many years before it was written (he
also states that Madam Wen's ghost is said to swim the Lake called Llyn
Traffwll (this is where its reputed that she hid in a cave, and its not
far
from Bryn Eithin)on Ester Sunday morning each year.
Another
interesting fact is that the author WD Owen (born Oct 21 1874 - died 4
November 1925)attended the local school at Bryngwran but also stayed on
as a
student teacher at the school afterwards. Interesting in that he not only
lived virtually a stone's throw from Bryn Eithin (and must have known the
Hughes family well) but may well have also taught your Grandfather at the
local school. My interest in this is that my Great Grandparents..Thomas
HUGHES and Ellen HUGHES, nee JONES lived in a cottage not far from there
where it is believed that the ghost of the residence...might have a
connection or in fact be the White Lady...I have been trying for two
years
now to research it more...since the connection with my Hughes and the
closeness to the original author..Hope this helps and would love to hear
more
on this myself...
Regards,
Lynn
