On the back of a lovely pair of silhouettes that have been in my family for years, is
written in the same beautiful copperplate hand :
1. "R.H. HUGHES, Bache Hall, Cheshire. Brother of Lord Dinorben and father of the
late H.R. HUGHES, Kinmel, Denbighshire."
2. "Barbara HUGHES (nee SPARROW), wife of the late R.H. HUGHES of Bache Hall,
Cheshire. Daughter of the late J.B. SPARROW of Red Hill, Anglesea"
A bit of background: John Bodychen SPARROW and his wife Anne (nee LEWIS of Trysglwyn)
were married at Gretna Green in May 1772 when they were 18 but the following year their
fathers' gave consent for their marriage by regular licence. They remarried in August
1773 (in Beaumaris, I believe) and lived at Red Hill, near Beaumaris.
Their daughter, Barbara SPARROW (b 1777) married Robert Hugh HUGHES (Sr) (b. 1774) (aka
Hugh Robert Hughes) in about 1800 at Beaumaris and moved to Cheshire. Their son, Hugh
Robert HUGHES (Jr) (b 1827) of Kinmel Park, Denbighshire is recorded in 1873 as being one
of the great landowners in Wales, having over 15,000 acres.
Does anyone have any information about Barbara (nee SPARROW) or Robert/Hugh HUGHES (Sr)?
I am sure if I found a link, we'd turn out to be the "poor relations" of the
HUGHES family!
