To all researchers interested in history of anglican clerics, the following
response from the assistant archivist, Lambeth Palace Library, may be of
interest:
Dear Mr Webster
For records of the diocese of Bangor, you could try contacting the National
Library of Wales to see whether there is a record of Jones's ordination in
that diocese. The contact details are: National Library of Wales: Department
of Collection Services, Aberystwyth SY23 3BU Tel: 01970 632800 Fax: 01970
632883 Email: ymh.lc(a)llgc.org.uk Website:

At this period, it can be difficult to locate ordination records if you do
not know the diocese in which the ordination took place, since biographical
sources on clergymen are limited (e.g. Crockford's Clerical Directory was
published only from the 1850s). Many records relating to clergymen are held
locally rather than centrally here at Lambeth Palace Library. Similarly, we
do not hold a complete record of appointments of clergymen. There is a
project in progress, the Clergy of the Church of England database, which is
compiling data from such local sources, 1540-1835. The project is still in
progress and at the moment there is currently data available only for the
diocese of Rochester, but it might be worth bearing this resource is mind as
more data goes online. The website is at:

There is no charge for providing this information to you, but please
consider sending a donation or joining the Friends of Lambeth Palace
Library. The Library is not maintained by public or university funding and
needs your support.
Yours,
Rachel Cosgrave

To Dewi, Glyn and Alwyn - many thanks for your useful suggestions. I will
follow up with the Library of Wales and Jones' Oxford College.
