I learnt recently that my gt grandfather's brother, Lewis HUMPHREYS (b 1852
Llanbrynmair) established a grocery business in Upper Bangor and was later joined by a
younger brother, John (1858 Llanbrynmair). Their wholesale and retail business was very
successful and they later also established a bakery and cafe (The Corner House Cafe)
across the road from this business in Upper Bangor.
Lewis had a weekly routine of collecting money from the shops they supplied but was
apparently robbed and killed on Menai Bridge after which John carried on the business
until my grandfather, Emyr HUMPHREYS (1888 Bangor), took over. I don't know when
Lewis died (checked FBMD) but it was probably between 1882 and 1900 (in 1881 Lewis and
John were lodgers in Capaella, Bangor). I don't think Lewis ever married.
Surely such a death would have been covered by local papers, but which (Bangor,
Caernarfon, Anglesey?) and how would I go about finding copies?
Thanks
Lizzie
