Hello Bill,
Thank you so much for this information. This is so new to me at the moment
that I really do appreciate any information on the name "Sidney" it
certainly created a lot of interesting emails from some nice folks on the
Glamorgan list, but we were all wrong and so surprised when we learned that
"Sidney" really was a female. I will certainly keep your email for future
reference.
Thank you again,
Mary

Mary
In 1814, my ancestor Anna Maria Sidney Wilhelmina Jones was born in
Mauritius. Her father, military chaplain in Port Louis, was Robert Edward
Jones, b 1779 at Llanfaes, younger brother of John Hampton Lewis of
Henllys,
Llanfaes. He, Robert, had married, at Beaumaris in 1812, Susannah
Dorothea
Williams, d of John Williams of Peniarth ucha, formerly called Pen or
Bryn
Glassan, in Llanegryn, co Merioneth (Griffith's "Pedigrees of Anglesey and
Carnarvonshire").
Susannah's grandfather, William Williams of Peniarth had married Susannah
Freke, d and heiress of John Freke, senior surgeon of St Bartholomew's
Hospital. Their son John Williams, who, like his father, was High Sheriff
of Merioneth, lived at Henllys, Llanfaes, in Anglesey, and his eldest son,
William Williams, barrister at Lincoln's Inn, sold Peniarth.
The latter's younger siblings were christened at Llanfaes. Their names
were
John Freke Lloyd, Robert Vaughan Wynn Williams, Gay(nor), Susannah
Dorothea
(mentioned above), Elisa Lucy, SIDNEY (christened 1790) and Margaret
Mary.
The Robert Vaughan Wynn Williams mentioned above, High Sheriff of
Carnarvonshire 1853-4, had from his second marriage children Bulkeley,
Freke, SIDNEY and Robert.
I have not been able to determine the origin of the tradition in this
family
of the female name, Sidney.
Best wishes,
Bill Webster
(Sydney)

Mary,
Sidney was the name of the wife of Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, the
Elizabethan
genealogist.
