Robert/Bob
Thank you very much for all this information and I am very grateful to have
Jane and Hugh HUGHES' marriage of 1830 confirmed as being in Penmon.
Interestingly, my family notes indicate that Jane PARRY (or WILLIAMS) and
Hugh HUGHES' marriage was witnessed by William J. PARRY (perhaps that is
where the patrynomics comes into play?) and John WATKIN. I believe that
Hugh's parents were John HUGHES and Elizabeth WATKIN (m 1804 Holyhead), so
perhaps John WATKIN was an uncle or grandfather to Hugh? I wouldn't have
thought a surname like WATKIN would have been particularly common in AGY?
From your 1841 census information (definitely the right family), Hugh
HUGHES
appears to have been born "across the Straits" but according to
the 1851 Bangor census (Genuki on line plus family notes) he is
described as (42), mason, born Holyhead. The rest of the family tallies and
are also living at Brittania Bridge (Folio 106) - dau Jane had died in 1845.
So I wonder if the 1841 census writer made a mistake with where Hugh was
born?
I notice there were some other HUGHES living at Brittania Bridge in 1851
(same
Folio number) and wonder if Brittania Bridge is actually a row of cottages
as Hugh HUGHES (42) and George HUGHES (25) b AGY are both listed as Heads?
HUGHES, PARRY and WILLIAMS seem to be common surnames in the Penmon area,
so it gets quite difficult to disentangle relationships!
Kind regards and thanks for your efforts.
