Hi there, I am really glad you have copied me in to this.
I know the aspenlea address as Jane, not sure who Lizzie is but hello!, not
sure who else I am writing too, apart from my father who I have copied in!
but here is a contribution from Birmingham UK.
I have been on this trail too, and found a newspaper article in the National
Library in Aberystwyth, which records Lewis's death. I did request a copy
of the article as it was too late in the day to get one there and then, but
it has never arrived. I haven't had a chance to follow it up since, but you
have prompted me.
The information I have is an entry in 'The Caernarvon and Denbigh Herald',
25th February 1887 (Friday I think). What I noted from the article is:
Recorded between one and two o'clock on Saturday afternoon (presumably 19th
Feb), a body was found at ten to twelve am on the beach near the Green, at
Beaumaris. Identified as Lewis Humphrey, a Grocer on the High Street and
Upper Bangor. His mother had arrived on Friday evening (presumably 18th
Feb) to be present at the marriage of the younger brother (presumably John)
who manages the shop at Upper Bangor. The marriage to take place this week.
Coroner's inquest scheduled for Monday.
Verdict: Lewis Humphrey, 33 years old, 'Found drowned'. No suspicion of
foul play or suicide A small cut was noted on his forehead above the right
eye-brow, inflicted before death. He had been at the Liverpool Arms for a
drink and a meal the night before. Evidence seemed to imply that he might
have been a bit tipsy but not drunk. He only had coppers on him when he was
found, whereas he had been seen to have silver the night before (certainly
the story handed down in my family is that he was mugged and killed).
Hope this is helpful. I do intend to get a copy if I can next time I am in
Wales, (in about a weeks time).
All best to all
Alison ( Lewis's youngest sister Annie's great, granddaughter),

Subject: HUMPHREYS - Murdered in 1887!
Hallo Listers
You may recall some time ago I was trying to trace the death of Lewis
HUMPHREYS (b 1852 Bont, Llanbrynmair) who was rumoured to have been
murdered on the Menai Bridge whilst collecting the rent/takings for the
grocery businesses they ran from/in Bangor. I had found him in 1881 but
not 1891 and David Price suggested Lewis had exhibited his spaniel in the
Bangor Agricultural Show in 1885. So this certainly narrowed his time of
death and I finally traced it to 1887.
Today his death certificate arrived! Although a little difficult to read
I think it says:
1887 Death in the subdistrict of Beaumaris, County of Anglesey
WHEN/WHERE DIED: 19 February 1887, Menai Straits opposite to the parish of
Beaumaris, found drowned (?? NSD)
NAME: Lewis Humphreys
AGE: 33 years
OCCUPATION: Grocer and provision dealer
CAUSE OF DEATH: Found drowned
INFORMANT: Certificate received from R Jones Roberts, Coroner (?) for
Anglesey. Inquest held 21 Feb 1887.
So it is definitely him and perhaps he was attacked on Menai Bridge,
thrown off into the Menai Straits where he drowned.
Now, could SKS please point me in the right direction for a newspaper
(Beaumaris/Bangor/Caernarvon?) report on Lewis' death , or tell me where I
could get a copy of the inquest? Thanks so much.
Lizzie
