Dear Iolo,
I don't know any more than I wrote in the email but I must say I was interested and -
given patronymics are likely to be the case here - I think that you could certainly say
that EITHER Coningsby MIGHT be "the one". I should think that both wills would
be interesting to obtain from the National Library and looked further into.
Have you also looked at the book on history of Members of Parliament? Their biographical
details are quite extensive including - where known - predecessors and descendents.
Coningsby Williams should be there. I think it is by a Birkoff.
I am having similar difficulties with my Goodmans. Nothing - seemingly - prior to a 1768
marriage in Llangian. However, I still have to trawl through parish registers and Bishops
Transcripts in the hope of finding a mention of Goodman either as a surname or as a
christian name.
There was a fascinating article in Gwreiddiau Gwynedd a while back on the Wheldons of
Llanberis detailing exactly the same problem with a Weldone Jones fathering a
something-or-other Weldon and so on. At around the same time.
As I have previously said, anyone with similarly unusual names in their family tree can do
worse than ask Dafydd Hayes (see Genfair) to search all instances of the name (both as a
surname and a christian name).
Yours,
Ian SW9

Thanks for the information about Coningsbys.
Someone called Bryan Owen had e-mailed me two years ago with the
information that my ancestor Coningsby Griffith (the father of Jane
Conngsby) was the reputed son of Griffith Williams of Llangristiolus
(and is therefore the same as Coningsby Williams below). The fact of his
association with the Llangristiolus area (he was buried there and had
held property there although he spent much of his life in the
neighbouring parish of Llanfihangel Ysgeifiog) would back this up.
But it is interesting to hear about the Coningsby Griffith from
Llanrhuddlad. Any idea when he was born? (Just in case he might be old
enough to have a daughter born in 1731, which might suggest the
possibility that I might have been barking up the wrong family tree all
this time!)
