I wondered if your friend's relation might have been in the services and, forgetting
my schoolboy history, I had to resort to my encyclopaedia - France and Britain declared
war on Russia on 28 March 1854 leading to the Crimean war over control of the Black Sea
(this ended in 1856 after the campaign celebrated in Tennyson's poem and the stuff of
lots of school history lessons).
I wonder if it is worth looking through the PRO War Office (WO) indexes available on line?
I would look for "Ruscoe" and "Roscoe", maybe other variants, as I
remember Roscoe being quite a famous Liverpool name.
Yours,
Ian
