HELP PLEASE!
I have been trying to find the family origins of my g.g.grandmother Mary Hughes for more
than 10 years.
Mary Hughes [c. 1816-1843] married Hugh Lewis [1814-1890] in the Anglesey parish of
Llanfihangel Esgeifiog on 8 June 1835. Mary Hughes died while giving birth to her fourth
son, John Lewis in 1843. But despite concerted efforts I have not been able to trace Mary
Hughes' origins.
By chance, I recently found reference to what appears to be Mary's seventeen year old
John Lewis in the 1861 census.
He is recorded at ther Llangefni house Tyn y Grisiun [?], adjacent to Ty Mawr. The
exciting part was that John's maternal grandmother is shown with him: Elizabeth
Thomas, pauper and widow, aged 74 and born at Holyhead. Elizabeth, born c. 1787, is
therefore probably Mary Hughes' mother.
I need help trying to follow this up, particularly the following:
1. Can anyone help me find a birth record in Holyhead, or marriage, for Elizabeth Thomas
born c. 1787
2. What is the status of Elizabeth Thomas' second name [ie Thomas]? Would her husband
be named: someone Thomas, or Thomas someone - if you know what I mean. Mary Hughes'
first son was named Thomas Lewis, if that helps. Mary herself was always recorded as Mary
Hughes, but I am uncertain if the Hughes surname refers to her father's first or
second names. Any advice warmly received!
3. Can someone please help me with the Llangefni house name Tyn y Grisiun - I can't
quite work out the handwrting. What does this name translate to and does this house still
exist? The house next door is Ty Mawr and the next in line again Glanhufa.
Thank-you,
John Lewis
