Questions: My grandfather who lived in a small village on Anglesey had
three sisters who had illegitimate children in the period 1890-1915.
Explanations I've received when asked why this might have been are:
1. The area was rural and there weren't a lot of men around, especially
during War-time, so married men were pretty much "it".
2. There was a class system in place, where if you were a domestic, you
were "fair game" for the upper crust. An "Upstairs/Downstairs"
situation.
I imagine if these women were "looked down on" in their villages, it might
be a reason why they chose to immigrate to the U.S. But maybe it was just a
"fact of life" where they lived?
Does anyone have an explanation why in Victorian times this would be taking
place on Anglesey?
I would also like to know how illegitimacy was treated for recordkeeping
purposes by the government. If I request a birth certificate from the GRO,
will I receive both mother and biological father's names?
Thanks,
K.M. Thomas

I would be grateful if anyone could look up the censuses for 1841 and
1851 for Plas in Llanbadrig.
I have an ancestor Owen Jones who according to the 1851 census in
Liverpool, was born in Amlwch around 1823, but the birthplace in the
1861 census is difficult to read. The 1871 census has a birthplace that
looks like ---bedr- (Llanbedrgoch or Llanbadrig? But Llanbadrig is far
more likely to be described as near Amlwch).
Owen married at Nannerch, Flintshire in 1849, and was living at
Liverpool, but his father was a farmer called William Jones.
Having checked a website that has christenings 1806-1837 for Methodist
chapels in Anglesey, I have found a very likely candidate in Owen Jones
who was born in September 1822, at Plas, Llanbadrig, and christened at
Bethesda chapel, Cemaes. His father is a farmer called William, and his
mother is Mary (formerly Jones).
I would be grateful for a census lookup for that farm in 1841 and 1851,
which should strenghten my hunch, and give more ideas for tracing further.
Thanks.

Hi Everyone, I am new to the list, and I am searching out the surname
Hughes Main one being John Hughes [ b ] 1853 in Beaumaris and lived there
until approximately 1871, found him in 1877 when he married Alice Chrimes
which led to 8 children, I have sent for the marriage certificate hoping
to
find his parents, hoping that his fathers name is not John, I wonder just
how many Hughes were born in Beamaris in the year 1853, I do not have
access
to the U K site so if someone could be so kind as to take a boo for me I
would appreciate it.
Kindest Regards,
Mike Lee,
Ontario, Canada.
