Hello Ian,
thanks for your emails. In the Oxford Alumni there are:
- Maurice Hughes, son of Hugh of Llanrwst , Jesus College matric 1783,
curate of Capel Curig and Dolwydd Elain, d 1843
- Robert Hughes, son of Hugh of Llanrwst, Jesus College matric 1793
Now it seemed to me as if these 2 could be brothers, but I think I wrongly
assumed that the Rev Morris Hughes who was at St Anne's Penrhyn and then at
Pentraeth was the Maurice above.
I now know that this was not the case, so am assuming that these 2 were in
fact.
The confusion arose because the wedding of Rev Robert Hughes' daughter
was carried out by the Rev Morris(of St Anne's).
However, the information about Maurice (above) gives him as the vicar of
Capel Curig, which was actually where Robert was, and also gives his date of
death as 1843, which was when Robert died. Hence my confusion and plea for
clarification!
Thanks once again for your assistance, I will indeed look for JWG
among the Oxford Alumni.
best wishes, Judith

Subject: [AGY] Rev Morris HUGHES/ Rev Joseph William GRIFFITH ofPentraeth
Alumni Oxoniensis should contain a reference to Joseph William (Jesus is
the "Welsh" college) including his father's name. It is worth looking for
fathers there too as Revs - and JPs - in the 19th century were often
members of the "squirearchy" (major or minor) as others have dubbed it and
may not have been the first of the family to go to university. Obviously
not as useful with some names as with other more rare ones.
