Hi again
Since my post a week ago I've established (from a copy of his parents'
marriage certificate) that artist Warren WILLIAMS' paternal grandfather was
in fact a Hugh WILLIAMS, farmer.
In which case this would appear to be his father John, with parents &
siblngs :-
1851 Wales Census
Bodwaren, Holyhead
Hugh WILLIAMS, 65, farmer of 82 acres, AGY Holyhead
Dorothy, wife, 56, CAE Llanllyfni
Hugh, son, U, 33, farmer's son, AGY Holyhead
John, son, U, 24, sailor, AGY Holyhead
Henry, son, U, 22, smith, AGY Holyhead
Richard, son, 12, AGY Holyhead
The Holyhead St Cybi parish registers have the following baptisms for
children of Hugh & Dorothy WILLIAMS, farmer, of Bodwaren, Holyhead :-
1813 (7 June) Margaret
1815 (23 July) William
1818 (5 Dec) Hugh
1821 (6 Jan) Emma
1825 (27 Mar) Elizabeth
1827 (1 July) John
(I don't have access to records after 25 November 1827).
Crosby lightship seaman John WILLIAMS (from the 1861 England Census) named
his only son HUGH and only daughter Harriet Dorothy.
So the inspiration for Liverpool-born artist Hugh's 'professional' name of
Warren WILLIAMS looks to have been the name of his grandparents' farm in
Holyhead rather than surname of an ancestor?
In which case the marriage I'm now seeking is that of a Hugh WILLIAMS and a
Dorothy, sometime between 1810 and 1813, either in Holyhead or CAE
Llanllyfni?
Regards
Gordon

Subject: [AGY] Warren WILLIAMS, artist - b1863 Holyhead?
Hi
I'm trying to determine the ancestry of British painter Warren WILLIAMS,
described here :-
http://www.benards-gallery.co.uk/biography/warren_williams.pdf
Samples of whose work can be seen at :-
http://www.baronfineart.com/Gallery/warren_williams.htm
And gravestone here :-
http://www.findonvillage.com/0986_cissbury_ring_mystery_with_warren_willi...
He married my first cousin twice removed Cicely JONES (b1869 New Brighton)
on 17 February 1892 in Bidston St Oswald (Cheshire) and had six surviving
WILLIAMS children :-
1893 Hubert Warren (b Liscard)
1894 Nesta Dorothy Warren (b New Brighton)
1897 Geoffrey Warren (b New Brighton)
1900 Ileene Cicily Warren (b AGY Cemaes)
1903 Eric Warren (b AGY Moelfre)
1905 Doreen Warren (b CAE Conway)
Despite what it says in his above biography I believe him to have been
born
plain Hugh WILLIAMS in 1860 in Liverpool, this being him with both parents
and half-sibling Elizabeth DAVIES :-
1861 Census
109 Mann Street, Toxteth, Liverpool
John WILLIAMS, 33, seaman in Crosby lightship, AGY Holyhead
Elizabeth, wife, 38, DEN Wrexham
Elizabeth, daur, 7, LAN Liverpool
Hugh, 5 months, LAN Liverpool
Elizabeth LLOYD, servant, U, 21, DEN Wrexham
Hugh's mother is believed to have been an Elizabeth LLOYD, born
c1822 in
Wrexham, who married a Robert DAVIES in 1852 in Liverpool St Phillip but
was
widowed by the time she married John WILLIAMS five years later in Toxteth
St
John the Baptist.
John WILLIAMS died in Toxteth on 15 March 1869 at the early age of 41,
his occupation being given as officer on board the Mersey Buoy Tender.
One strong possibility for John with his earlier family is :-
1851 Census
Forge Hill, Holyhead
William WILLIAMS, 49, boatman, Holyhead
Ellinor, wife, 48, Holyhead
John, son, U, 21, Holyhead [no occupation shown]
Jane, daur, 17, Holyhead
William, son, 9, Holyhead
Wondered if anyone on the list might have access to early Holyhead
registers
and might be able to identify John's baptism c1827-1830?
And maybe also his parents' marriage, which ideally would identify his
mother as Ellinor WARREN, thus explaining artist grandson Hugh's apparent
fascination with this name?
