Hi
I am not expecting anyone to have my John Jones born Amlwch circa 1826, son
of Owen and ? I have searched every record I can find but he remains
elusive! Plenty of John Jones's, sons of Owen Jones's born in the area in
the 1820s but none fits the bill. I know he followed in his father's
footsteps and became a copper miner, but didn't they all! I even visited
Parys Mountain last summer in the hope of some inspiration but it escaped
me.
What I am wondering is if anyone has come across any migration to or links
with, either the slate mines at Corris or the copper mines in Cwmafon,
Glamorgan. My John seems a little confused about his birth place in the
census, giving Corris in 1851 and Amlwch thereafter. Family story says the
family were definitely from Anglesey, but I am wondering where Corris fitted
in. Did some of the Amwlch families move from a depressed copper mining area
to the booming slate works in the 1820s or 1830s? The first real record I
have of John is when he married in Taibach, Glamorgan in 1848. He seemed to
work in the copper mines then and for the rest of his life.
Thanks
Helen
