Thanks for the explanation - and I agree! Much cheaper to do it as you
describe.

Is this a UK government affiliated site charging money?
The short answer is yes!
However, the government has always either charged or permitted charges to be
levied for family history information, starting with payments to the heralds
in the 1300's, through fees to vicars for PR lookups to charges for BMD
certificates.
When I started doing family history 25+ years ago it was an extremely
expensive hobby, Family History Societies' volunteer projects and the
internet genealogical fraternity have made it a lot cheaper over the past
few
years.
I would love it if the census on-line was free, but having said that I think
that the 1901 on-line service is a bargain.
It costs me 35 pence for a photocopy of a fiche page from my local library.
For 75 pence I can download a similar copy from the comfort of my own home.
As the 10 copies I have downloaded for £7.50 tonight have come from
Anglesey,
Pontypridd, Shropshire and Derbyshire (I live near Llandudno) I have
probably
saved in excess of £500 of travelling and b&b fees, and in a couple of hours
tonight, I have done what took me many years from the first publication of
the 1871 census.
All the best
Alwyn
