Hello Dot,
Where did you get the marriage certificate from?
If it is a "photocopy" type certificate from the GRO, there are two options
for trying to clarify the father's name. First look in the index (or on
FreeBMD) for the surname in the appropriate quarter, a search for a matching
reference number might give a clearer indication of the given name. Secondly,
using the information you have, you could order a copy of the certificate
from the local registration office (some kind registrars might give you the
information, without requiring you to buy a second copy of the certificate).
The local copy will be in a different hand and might be more legible.
If you have a hand-written copy of the certificate, the problems of
illegibility could be because of the copier's handwriting, send the
certificate back to the office where you got it from and ask for it to be
exchanged for a clearer copy.
If you don't want to do either of these, I have found that the best
interpreters of untidy handwriting are small local chemists (not the big
chains), who are often pleased to help out.
Regards
Alwyn
