Hi. I am looking for information and relatives for Mesach Jones, born in
Llanfwrog, Anglesey c.1807 (birth date on census). Mesach married Jane from
Llanidan. He is in the census for Llanidan from 1841 until his death in

I have checked for births and deaths and this is the same Emma as 1851,
there are only 3 Emma's on Anglesey in 1841 none fit. So she was either
living somewhere else (for example Liverpool although this would not have
been as likely in 1841 as it would later due to the mass emigration of the
1850's and 60's) with a relative and maybe recorded with the name of the
person she was with or she was left off the census.
Anglesey has been divided into areas on many different occasions, into
commotes and hundreds for instance (a hundred small settlements) and more
importantly parishes based upon a parish church (there were 77) Relatively
recently 7 others were added for the purposes of marriage registers, Talwrn
and Valley are examples. Some were not used recently such as Llanfair y
Cwmwd and Gwredog. Both Llanfair ME and Llandyfrydog were parishes in their
own right. In 1834 an act was passed in which the administration of the poor
was taken over by the country (the poor law) instead of the parish (parish
relief) to many this was a terrible step and quite a lot of rioting
followed. Wales resisted and eventually a poor law commissioner was sent
here in 1857, the last union workhouse was Rhaeader, Radnorshire and was not
built until the late 1870's. Anglesey, under this act, was now divided into
Unions, with sub districts. Anglesey Union consisted of Anglesey but not
most of the eastern side. Beaumaris sub district was in Bangor,
Caernarvonshire Union this included Llangristiolus which now would be
considered in the middle of the island. Llanidan sub district included
Newborough and was in Caernarvon Union. In 1857 this was changed by
splitting the Holyhead Union from the Anglesey Union and more of Anglesey
was placed in the Bangor Union, eg Pentraeth. When civil registration was
introduced in 1837, the boundaries were based on the Unions, so births in
Beaumaris are recorded as Bangor not Anglesey. The 1841 census was based on
the hundreds and so all of Anglesey is Anglesey. However the 1851 and
subsequent census were based on the Unions and so we have a large area of
Anglesey recorded as for example Beaumaris, Caernarvonshire.
The sub districts at the beginning were Amlwch, Holyhead, Llanddeusant,
Llandyfrydog, Llangefni with Beaumaris & Llanidan as sub districts in
Caernarvonshire. Bodedern was also a sub district which changed its' base
several times, it became Bryngwran and then Valley. There were many changes
over the years, Llandyfrydog was rearranged, bits went to other sub
districts and a smaller area became Llanfechell sub district. Everything
changed in 1937!
I hope I have explained this adequately for you, it is really an hour long
talk. Each sub districts had a registration book and registrar (who had to
live in his sub district) of their own for the purposes of births and
deaths. Hence when I do a search or am setting up an index, I quote the
registration book (sub district and book number) the page number in the book
and the entry number in the book so that it can be easily found.
Best wishes Dave

Thank you so much for the information, it is very exciting to hear. How
exciting that must be to be transcribing all that information. Thank you for
doing all of that. I have so much geography to learn as I thought that
Llandyfrydog was in an equal area type as Llanfair ME. I should invest in a
good old map :) I am a little bit confused though, although it's probably
due to me being so new at this, but if Emma shows as being born June 30,
1840 and wasn't born prior to the 1841 census, when would the 1841 census
have been taken?

Hello all, I have been busy trying to get Anglesey birth indexes into some
kind of shape and haven't replied to anything recently. But I can help a
little with this.
Owen Jones son of Owen Jones (labourer)and Ellin (lately Hughes, formerly
Williams) born 8th. July 1838 at Pentre Garreg, LME. Registered in
Llandyfrydog district book 1 page 32.
Emma Jones daughter of Owen Jones (labourer)and Ellin (lately Hughes,
formerly Williams) born 30th. June 1840 at Pentre Garreg Bach, LME.
Registered in Llandyfrydog district book 2 page 5. So Ellin had probably
been married before and was a widow when she married Owen. Emma was born
after the 1841 census was taken. My index only reaches 1841 from July 1837
and all ready there are 10,000 names.

Subject: [AGY] Owen Jones Request
Sorry, I've been having trouble getting the posting up. Apparently it has
something to do with my email, so I am going to try this and see what
happenes. Here is the request:
I am requesting information on the family of Owen Jones b.c1787-1791 (ages
are different on census') living at Pentre Garrog Bach, Llanfair Mathafarn
Anglesey in 1841 Owen Jones, Sr, Ann daughter, Owen son and Marry.
In 1851 the names remain the same with the additon of Emma aged 10 and Marry
is shown as a sister; Owen Sr and sister Marry are both shown as being born
in Llaneugrad. (I'm not certain what happened to Owen's wife in 1841,
possibly died in childbirth, but daughter Emma is not listed in 1841
either). Young Owen is still living with his father, aged 12 and Ann is not
there, she would have been 15-16 yrs.
In 1861 Owen Sr. is still living in Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf at Pentre
Garrog Bach with sister Marry now 82 and daughter Emma aged 20.
I have confirmed this family connection through a samll family bible
(inscribed by Ann Jones of Llanfair M.E. Pentre Garrog, October 17, 1853)
who shows in the 1841 Wales Census at 5 yrs. I am not sure what the date
stands for, still a puzzle.
Ann Jones is my gg grandmother, she married Edward Williams who I was told
by family stories was a builder in Liverpool. I have not confirmed their
marriage other than through cenus as there are too many possibilities to
send for certificates. Edward and Ann had several children, one of those
children Ann Williams, my g grandmother married William Parry and had my
grandmother Anne Gwenvron Parry b.1901 as an only child who was born at 325
Westminster Road, the same address of Ann Jones and Edward Williams as shown
in West Derby Kirkdale Census' 1871 through 1901, in 1861 they are in
Everton.
In 1881 the Williams family has an addition of Elizabeth Thomas, of North
Wales, Anglesey, a neice, which then takes me back to the referral of 1871
Wales Census, Llanfair M.E. where the Thomas family is residing in Pentre
Garrog Bach, and I am wondering if this Elizabeth should be Ellin as the
birth dates match up. As you can see, with the Jones, Williams, Parry
connections, there is loads to sift through in Anglesey. am living in
Canada, and any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi
I am looking for a Mary Jones (b.about 1830) on Anglesey. About 1850-51
she married Capt. John Williams of Denbighshire, a merchant mariner--he
was lost at sea in 1879. In 1852 Liverpool their only child was my
ggrandmother Mary Jane Williams. Mary Jones appaarently died by about
1857 because John Williams took another wife, and then another (Mary
Griffith of Amlwch). When at sea in this later period, he left his
family in Amlwch, Anglesey. John Williams father was another John
Williams in Denbighshire. There was a sister named Elizabeth Williams
(b. about 1830 in Denbigh)who lived with them in 1851 Liverpool, I
presume helping Mary Jones through her pregnancy. She eventually married
a
What do you know about your Mary Jones. Was Owen Jones a mariner?

Dear Linda,
I don't think I can help you much, but I am interested in the
Reverend Henry Rowlands. There were several such who were vicars of
Llanidan, and they all originated in a Bishop of Bangor of that name
who lived at the end of the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1. One of them
was the author of a strange book, Mona Antiqua Restaurata (it's on
line - type its title into Google and you'll get it. The last one of
all was unmarried and presumably the last of the line. My great
grandfather William Critchlow Harris, 1813 - 99,
remembered witnessing this Rev. Henry Rowlands going over the family
genealogy with his grandmother, Ellinor (Morris) Harris, when he was
a small boy (he emigrated to Canada in 1854). Unfortunately we don't
know exactly how they were related because the first four pages of a
letter he wrote shortly before his death setting out is missing its
first 4 or 5 pages.
The text of Mona Antiqua Restaurata is now "on line". Just
type Mona Antiqua Restaurata into Google and you'll find it.
Best wishes, Robert Tuck
Hello,
Is there SKS who could help me locate the birth of Ann(e) ROWLAND(S),
who was born approx. 1775-76 in the parish of Llanidan?
I have no info on her parents but understand she was married by licence.
WOuld a licence (25 March 1801) or a marriage bond (issued 24 March
1801) have info as to names of parents?
Also seeking info about an Owen Society? Is that group for Owen surname
in Wales?
Thanks in advance.
Linda
