We Welsh descendants that suffer from the curse of the common surname might benefit from participation in DNA surname projects. I first learned about this from the National Geographic "Genographic Project". https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html
I sent my DNA sample to them, and they confirmed that I am from the most common group of human immigrants to Western European (the R1b haplogroup) which makes up about 70% of the residents in south England and 90% of residents in Ireland. That's as far as the Genographic Project goes. But further analysis of the DNA can be conducted to determine related populations and even common ancestry.
The Williams line of my ancestry has been the most difficult to research. But I do know that my Williams came from Anglesey, including some names and specific locations from the census and other 1800's records. But there's little hope in making progress much further back when the names are Williams, Jones, and Hughes. So I decided to go ahead and have my DNA tested further, in hopes that I could make connections with other Williams that are likely relatives. Family Tree DNA http://www.familytreedna.com/ is the group that works with National Geographic for this purpose. For an extra payment, they are in the process of getting me the further details.
As it turns out, when it comes to making hopeful DNA matches with others, common surnames can actually be a blessing! For example, the Williams DNA surname project has over 200 participants http://williams.genealogy.fm/results_page.htmconnections and is growing rapidly (in contrast, the Pritchard surname project has just 5 participants). And even though the biologists have only provided me with 25 of my 37 DNA markers so far, I already have 3 good leads to investigate because my 25 markers are almost identical to 3 other Williams in the project.
I thought this might be interesting for some of you. It's a whole new twist on genealogy!
