First marriage
Owen OWENS was born Llechylched or Maelog or Trefdraeth, Anglesey, circa 1846. Three different censuses [census]; three different birthplaces. He lived in Newborough for much of his life and certainly in 1871, 1881 and 1891. His father was David Owens, a stonemason.
Ellin [Ellinor] GRIFFITH was born Aberffraw, Anglesey, circa 1846. Married Owen OWENS at the Parish Church in Aberffraw on 8th.December 1868. Lived in Newborough for much of her life until her death on 15th. April 1887.
Their CHILDREN
[1] Hugh OWENS was born Llangadwaladr, Anglesey in circa 1868/69. Possibility that Hugh might have been employed as a farm labourer in Llangadwaladr in 1891[?]
[2] David OWENS was born Newborough Anglesey, circa 1871. He was baptised in St. Peter's Church Newborough on 25th. December 1871. He died in 1880. He was buried at St.Peter's Churchyard, Newborough on 25th. October 1880.
[3] Owen OWENS was born Newborough Anglesey, circa 1874. He was baptised in St. Peter's Church Newborough on 3rd. May 1874. He died on 21 October 1880 at Ty Bach Newborough. He was buried at St.Peter's Churchyard, Newborough on 10th. November 1880.
[4] Ellin [Ellen] OWENS was born Newborough Anglesey, circa 1879. In 1891, an Ellen Owen, aged 13, born Newborough, was employed at Llainypwll, Newborough as a domestic servant. I do not know whether this is the same Ellin [Ellen] Owen.
[5] Ann OWENS was born at Ty Bach, Newborough Anglesey on 14th. March 1883 and was baptised in St. Peter's Church Newborough on 15th. April 1883..
[6] Esther OWENS was born at Ty Bach, Newborough Anglesey on 27th. April 1886 and was baptised in St. Peter's Church Newborough on 6th. June 1886.
On 15th. April 1887, Ellin OWEN, wife of Owen OWEN, died at Ty Bach Newborough. Her sister, Margaret Grifith was in attendance at the time of her death.
She was buried at St Peter's Churchyard Newborough on 19th. April 1887.
Second Marriage
On 22nd August 1887, Owen OWENS remarried at the Registry Office for the County of Caernarfon. His new bride was Ann Owen, a spinster and mat maker from Penylon, Newborough with three children, Thomas Henry Owen, born c. 1879; Lily OWEN, born circa 1881; and Ann OWEN, born circa 1883; and subsequently all lived together at Ty Bach, Newborough [1891 census]. She gave her father's details as David Owen, a Stonemason, deceased.
Thomas Henry OWEN [born Bodedern/Newborough?], Lily OWEN [born Newborough?] and Ann OWEN [born Newborough?] attended the Primary School in Newborough, having been admitted on 07.03.1887; 13.09.1887; and 28.07.1887 respectively; having already been baptised at St. Peter's Newborough on 23rd. August 1885 as the natural children of Ann Owen. There was no mention of a father. However, there was no reference to illegitimacy or of the children being bastards, which is unusual for that period in time.
On 3rd. February 1894, Ann[e] OWENS died at Long Shipping , Newborough, with Owen OWENS in attendance. Owen OWENS was then a slate quarry labourer.
Despite the Newborough School Records for Thomas Henry OWEN, Lily OWEN and Ann OWEN giving the following dates of birth, I have found no other confirmation of these birth dates,
namely:
Thomas Henry OWEN [11.06.1879] Lily OWEN [08.02.1881] Ann OWEN [02.04.1883]. Indeed, the Army Discharge Papers for Thomas Henry Owen in 1919, give his year of birth as 1867. I cannot accept that this date is correct, as I find it impossible to believe that Newborough Primary School would have accepted a 20 year old Thomas Henry OWEN as a pupil.
When Thomas Henry OWEN married in 1906, he gave his age as 27 and gave his father's details as Thomas Owen, deceased, a seaman.
My Grandfather [Taid] is the above mentioned Thomas Henry Owen, whose birth certificate I have been searching for in excess of ten years. I cannot find either him or his mother Ann [my Great-grandmother/hen nain], in the 1881 census; nor indeed his sister Lily. I cannot trace Ann Owen in any census prior to 1891.That is why I am researching the whole of the Owen Owens and Griffith families, as there may be some relative living today who knows the secret of who this mysterious Ann Owen was.
Even the marriage certificate for the Register Office ceremony of 22nd. August 1887 reads strangely:
Owen Owens: 40 : Widow: Carter: of Ty Bach Newborough: Father: David Owen: a Stonemason
Ann Owens: 38: Spinster of Penylon Newborough: Father David Owen deceased: a Stonemason.
There must have been some mutterings in Newborough when a recently bereaved widower married a spinster with three children, or am I missing something !!!
May I invite replies on how I might gainfully follow up the above information, and if anyone has any information to add about anyone in these families, please share it with me. Ten years is a long sentence !!!
Many thanks.

So no joy there.

Hi Dewi,
Maybe able to help with John Cave's email address. He writes to a friend of
my husbands who lives in Tasmania, who is originally from Holyhead, just
like my husband Goronwy.

Dear listers
To all enquiring about gravestone inscriptions for Holyhead cemeteries - St Cybi and Bethel baptist chapel have both been recorded by Gwynedd Family history Society and are available from the society - look at their web site for further information

Thank you for letting everyone know.

Hi Dewi
Thank you for your reply. I do not know whether Margaret Parry was
non-conformist but David Lloyd was christened in Beaumaris Parish Church as
were all his brothers and sisters. Marriages and burials also took place
there. As you say it will tell me more if I get the marriage certificate.
Thank you again for your helpful suggestions
Cheers
Hilary
Other cemeteries in Holyhead are St. Cybi's, which is now closed and St Seiriols. At St Seiriols, the church has been demolished, but the cemetery is still there.
