Hallo Listers
You may recall some time ago I was trying to trace the death of Lewis
HUMPHREYS (b 1852 Bont, Llanbrynmair) who was rumoured to have been murdered
on the Menai Bridge whilst collecting the rent/takings for the grocery
businesses they ran from/in Bangor. I had found him in 1881 but not 1891
and David Price suggested Lewis had exhibited his spaniel in the Bangor
Agricultural Show in 1885. So this certainly narrowed his time of death and
I finally traced it to 1887.
Today his death certificate arrived! Although a little difficult to read I
think it says:
1887 Death in the subdistrict of Beaumaris, County of Anglesey
WHEN/WHERE DIED: 19 February 1887, Menai Straits opposite to the parish of
Beaumaris, found drowned (?? NSD)
NAME: Lewis Humphreys
AGE: 33 years
OCCUPATION: Grocer and provision dealer
CAUSE OF DEATH: Found drowned
INFORMANT: Certificate received from R Jones Roberts, Coroner (?) for
Anglesey. Inquest held 21 Feb 1887.
So it is definitely him and perhaps he was attacked on Menai Bridge, thrown
off into the Menai Straits where he drowned.
Now, could SKS please point me in the right direction for a newspaper
(Beaumaris/Bangor/Caernarvon?) report on Lewis' death , or tell me where I
could get a copy of the inquest? Thanks so much.

Does anyone connect to this MARY GRIFFITH & brother EVAN GRIFFITH of
Amlwch? She was one of the wives of John Williams, master mariner and
was the wife named in his will in 1879.
JOHN WILLIAMS was a master mariner whose family lived in Amlwch, ANG, in
the 1861, 1871, & 1881 census reports. John himself died between the 1871
and 1881 census reports, lost at sea in 1879. His first wife was MARY
JONES and she died shortly after 3 May 1852, the date of birth of her
daughter MARY JANE WILLIAMS (1852-1905Liverpool); this birth was in 8
Court, Edmund St., Liverpool.
By the 1861 census the family was living in Amlwch, ANG and John had
remarried a MARY GRIFFITH (b.1827-28), and she and John had other
children: John G., William, Thomas R. Williams. It is possible that there
was a third wife named Mary between 1861-1881, but I can't pin this down.
These are the known children of JOHN WILLIAMS:
MARY JANE WILLIAMS - b. 1852 Liverpool; (m. G. M. HUGHES 1874 of Amlwch,
then Liverpool in 1902)
JOHN G.WILLIAMS - b. 1864 Amlwch - became a seaman (?)
WILLIAM WILLIAMS- B. 1865 Amlwch (became a joiner)
THOMAS R. WILLIAMS - b. 1869 Amlwch.
In the 1861 census, they lived at "Watermans Arms", Lower Quay St.,
Amlwch. The inn keeper at the time was a Richard Griffith, and I have
often wondered if he was a relative of Mary Griffith Williams and Evan
Griffith, Mary's apparent brother.
In the 1871 census, they lived in Chapel St. (no house number), Amlwch
In the 1881 census, they lived at 20 Llaneilian Rd., Amlwch with MARY's
brother EVAN GRIFFITH (age 55, unmarried, sailor, b. Amlwch). John
Williams had died by now, but his son John G. Williams is also not in
that residence, perhaps at sea or married.

Hi Lizzie
Earlier this year I was investigating my GGgrandfathers death in 1889
(shot while poaching) in LLanelli.
I went to the British Newspaper Library and found a full report of the
event in the local newspapers - including a desciption of him.
Now, I see that the library is hardly local for you, so this could be a
problem. However, the library will do searches for you. In the past
I have given them as much information as possible, they found the reports
and provided me with a quote for the cost. Once I had signed the agreement
they sent me photocopies of the articles.
They have a web site with a list of all the newspaper holdings they have.
http://www.bl.uk/collections/newspapers.html
Good luck with your search.

I don't have his occupation, which would be very useful. He may be the John Griffith baptised 14 April 1827 at St Eleth, Amlwch. How do I go about finding more details of the baptismal entry? e.g. names of parents, addresses etc.

That's all the baptism records give, just parents names. I'll look at
the 1881 census and see what it says.

Life is pleasant,
Death is peaceful,
It's the transition that's troublesome.
Thank you Gwyn for your suggestion, which has highlighted an omission on my part from my original e-mail.
The Trust Burial Ground Records are included in the Parish Burial Records, and the burials were carried out by the incumbent Rector and therefore there was a connection with the Anglican church.
Jim Owen, Rhyl.
Would someone please advise on the above.
Some of my relations have connections with Niwbwrch.
The Burial Records for the late 19th. century show two places of burial.
[1] The churchyard at St. Peter's.
[2] Graves in the Trust Burial Ground. My hen nain, Anne Owens, is buried here.
[a] Where is the Trust Burial Ground?
I have visited a 'cemetery' in Newborough which is situated on the left side of the road leading from the centre of Newborough to St. Peter's and is just past a left hand bend some 100 yards or so after the Church itself. I wonder if this is it?
[b] What is meant by " the Trust Burial Ground ". I understand, although I stand to be corrected, that a burial ground purely gives a right of burial unlike a cemetery, but who are these Trustees, and were only certain classes of persons allowed to be buried there?
[3] Is the " Trust" Burial Ground something different from a Church Burial ground? Who are the Trustees?
[4] Why and when was it created?
I would like to pay my respects to my hen nain next time I'm in Niwbwrch.
I look forward to receiving any answers, in part or as to the whole of my questions.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Jim Owen, Rhyl.

I'm no expert but I would guess that a Trust Burial Ground was for nonconfotmists who did not wish to be buried in an ANglican Church cemetery - and there would be lots of them in Sir Fon!

I believe they are usually give a piece of land near the church
cemetery to bury noncomformists. That has been my experience on visits
to churchyards. There was an area for noncomformists. I don't know
that every church did this though.

Parish registers - containing details of baptisms, marriages and burials in

for such events). Also Bishop's Transcripts for Coedana, Ceirchiog,
Heneglwys, Llanddeusant, Caergybi & Llanfachraeth.

We do not turn anyone away without a ticket and can issue a day ticket. For
a CARN ticket, which lasts for 4 years, users need to bring official

My great grandfather John Griffith is listed on the 1881 Census, living in Bangor, as 54 years old and born in Amlwch. Can anyone suggest how I can go about tracing his birth details.
I don't know anything about him, but his son became a sailmaker, and his own movements - Amlwch - Bangor - Porthmadog - Bangor may indicate a nautical connection.
