Hi Joyce
My great grandfather Owen Roberts was a teacher living in Llanidan School
house on the 1881, 1891 & 1901 Census.
Owen Roberts was there with his wife Ann(i)e & children Caroline Anne, Mary
Elizabeth, Ellen, Owen Thomas Roberts (my grandfather) & Fanny Dora.
I know that my grandfather Owen Thomas Robertswas buried in Bangor but I
wonder if Owen Roberts or his wife Annie were buried at Llanidan as they
spent so much of their married life in the parish.Could you possibly do a
look up for me too.
Many thanks
Anne Mehew

Hello Anne,
I'm sorry, but I couldn't find an entry for your Owen Roberts in the
Llanidan MI. There are three entries for an Owen Roberts, but they are not
the right age or time period. There are nine entries for Ann, Anne, or Annie
Roberts but none of those are the right age or time period either.
Best wishes,
Joyce

Thanks for the offer, Joyce, but I think my relatives were probably living
in Gwalchmai at the time of their death.
One of their children might have died in Llanidan, so if I can confirm that
at a later date I'll take advantage of your kind offer.
Regards,
Gwyn

Gwyn,
Llanidan certainly does still exist. My Nain and Taid are buried there in a lovely little cemetery. I have a nice pic of St. Mary`s Church if you want it. Now the general area is known as Bryn Siencyn and a popular tourist hot spot on the Menai Straits.

I would also like to know if Llangwyllog and Llanbeulan still exist, and
where are (were) they.
Thanks again,
Gwyn Williams

I am having trouble finding the birth index for Hugh Hughes as there are a number in Anglesey around the time he was born. He was age 3 on the 1851 census of Llanrhyddlad living at Pendrylla with
father John 45 born Llanrhyddlad
mother Margaret 43 born Llanfaethlu
sister Elinor 14
brother John 12
sister Mary 5
All siblings + Hugh were born at Llanrhyddlad.
I have gone through the film of the PR's of Llanrhyddlad & think I have found the christenings for Elinor (1837) & John (1839) which give the mother's maiden name as Williams. Unfortunately there is no mention of Hugh or Mary so I can't be sure of that.
Would appreciate any help on this family.

Thanks for your reply again Alwyn, I believe you answered my query re
Anglesey being included in Welsh BMD. This is very interesting information
and I guess I now have to find the 1861 census if I am to find out who he
married as he appears to be a widow according to this. Idon't suppose you
know if anyone has access to that otherwise I shall have to wait until I
caravan in Wales this summer.
Can anyone with access to the 1871 census Anglesey help me trace Owen Hughes my great great grandfather born about 1820 in Llanrhyddiad. I have him in the 1881 census as 61 living with his son and daughter and their families (10 in all) at Ty R Efail Heneglwys (I would love to know what Ty r Efail means). He is a widower by this time. I think from some christening records on LDS that his wife was called Margaret and I have found a marriage which fits in for Dec 1846 but she is called Hughes also. Would this be unusual to marry the same surname. He was a clock and watchmaker for part of his working life. I would be grateful for any help as a person who at 65 has just discovered Welsh roots.

I can't help with the 1861 Census at the moment unfortunately. However, in
your first letter you mentioned that Owen might have been married in 1846. If
this is correct, and if the couple was still having children in 1854 (when the
17 year old son mentioned in 1871 was born) then Owen Hughes AND his wife
should appear on the 1851 Census.
Although I don't have a copy, I know that the 1851 census has been indexed
and transcribed by Gwynedd FHS, so perhaps a list member with access to that may
be able to give you the details. If not try the Anglesey Lookup Exchange
site, where ther are details of volunteers who will do lookups from various
sources including the 1851 census:

Hullo List
My research is now moving away from Glamorgan into Anglesey, Caernarvonshire
and Merionith.
My GGF Griffith ROBERTS, according to Census data was born in Holyhead circa
1848, and died in Glamorgan in 1913. He married Elizabeth PRITCHARD
(daughters Birth Certificate) born circa 1843 in Llandwrog, died 1915 in
Glamorgan, about 1871 don't know where.
Their first child Margaret was born in Caernarvonshire, don't know where,
and the second, my GM Jane were born 14 April 1874 at Edmund Street,
Ffestiniog, Merionith.
Other children all daughters were born in Glamorgan.
Located possible matches in the 1851 Census for Holyhead and Llandwrog .
Griffith at either Thomas Street or London Road Holyhead and Elizabeth at
Drws y Coed or Menai Gwnion Llandwrog.
Does any one recognise any of the above information?
Being new to this part of Wales any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
