Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
None of the recent unpleasantness would have occurred, of course, had the
London Lovie whose posting sparked it all off obeyed list rules and voiced
his concerns over message-tagging to the Administrator instead of trying to
impose his high-speed, rat-race approach to genealogy on the entire list
membership.
I'm sure Alwyn would have found a way of dealing with the problem
diplomatically, as opposed to the public spat we've had to endure for the
last few days.
A lesson for us all, perhaps, whether Alwyn goes or stays.
Gordon Evans
Dear Alwyn
Why go at all, dont let these rude and ignorant people drive you from a job that you obviously have enjoyed You have done a great job and have helped many of us break down our brick walls.
these lists need people like you.

I would just like to say that I agree with Arlene, please don't give up
these lists. You do a wonderful job with them. Members need to refrain
from passing judgement on others & remember there is always the delete
button. Please let us all continue with our family history, that is what
these lists are for.
Best wishes to everyone

Some genealogy lists have dictatorial list administrators who lay down strict
list rules and "punish transgressors" by blocking them from posting to the
list for a period for a first offence and permanently banning them from the list
for subsequent transgressions. There are at least four members of the
northwest Wales list who have suffered this ultimate indignity. If I were to break
confidence and name them you would be shocked, because they are all positive
contributors to these lists.
Other genealogy lists have laid-back admins who just let list members do what
ever the xxx they like. These lists are often full of rude and insulting
messages but very few genuine family history queries, which are swept aside by the
vindictive and malicious postings.
Since I have been responsible for the northwest Wales lists I have tried to
compromise between these two extremes, by neither laying down hard and fast
rules nor ignoring breaches of mailing list etiquette. My approach has been to
try to explain mailing list conventions and to try to engage those who are
uncertain of the rational behind those conventions in a reasoned discussion.
My attempts to engage a rational discussion on the question of block quoting
previous mails on the WLS-Caernarfonshire list today have failed.
I have been accused of telling those who disagree with me to "get off the
road" and of "verbal diarrhoea" on list and most of the off-list messages are
unquotable. Four list members have unsubscribed as a direct result of the
discussion, including the membership treasurer of the local FHS.
I am not sure if the correct approach should have been to have come down like
a ton of bricks on those who breached the generally accepted mailing list
norms regarding quoting or if I should have allowed digests to continue to go out
with 20 ancestry.com adverts and five repeats of the same old messages. It is
clear however that I should not have engaged in a discussion on the subject.
As my position as list administrator has been severely compromised over this
issue, as I have been foully insulted in response to my comments on the issue
and as I am not willing to preside over a split between list and FHS. I intend
to give up the list administration for Gwynedd, Anglesey, Caernarfonshire and
Merioneth.
In order to pass the lists on tidily I need a volunteer (volunteers) willing
to take over the reigns - Stan perhaps?
If Stan, or anybody else, is willing to take on the responsibility of list
administration could they please let me know as soon as possible in order to
effect a smooth transfer?
After the transfer I will not, of course, remain a member of the lists in
order to "haunt" the new admin(s) like a list "Ted Heath to Mrs Thatcher".
Regards
Alwyn
Andy,
Do you know if this Sarah Davies had a sister or other relative by the name of Laura???
I am searching for family information on my Great Grandmother, Jane Agnes JONES. Originally from Wales, family lore & her tombstone say "she was born October 07, 1818 in Wales, and then came to the United States with her mother in early girlhood" (although a census report indicates she came to the USA in 1843). I am told her mother's name was Laura DAVIS/DAVIES (we have assumed that this was her maiden name). I do not know her father's name. We know that Jane Agnes worked in a fur shop in Brooklyn. Jane Agnes JONES married James BEGLEY in Brooklyn, New York, USA on January 14, 1844 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Brooklyn. I do not know where in Wales Jane Agnes came from, what her parents names were for certain, or if she had any siblings. I have, thus far, been unable to determine how to find information on her family. Any help in finding information on Jane Agnes Jones and her family in Wales would be very much appreciated.
Thank you so much for any help that you might be able to offer in my search,
Jeanne

Hello Listers
Hooray - you have just solved a problem that I've been toying with
recently - how to construct a simple family history web site complete with
photos. Not only does the Tribalpages site seem to fit the bill but they
host it FREE!!
I think Alwyn's idea of having the information "preserved" on such a site in
case of terrible dramas, such as fire, hard disc crashes etc, is excellent.
Now I have the incentive to create order from the chaos in my study!
Lizzie
Brisbane, Australia
I have come across an area of my research that I need confirmation of.
My Gr-Grandfather was Thomas HUGHES.........and now the area of concern is
this........I am trying to prove whether or not Hugh THOMAS was indeed the
father to Thomas HUGHES. At some point........I strongly believe that Thomas
THOMAS , son of Hugh THOMAS became Thomas HUGHES.........there was a Thomas
THOMAS with a brother John THOMAS.......being born in Llechycched, Anglesey
Wales.....also after researching this is what I have found......Would
someone please advise me as to how to prove this. I have been pouring over
Parish Registers at the Family History Center in my local for three
Tuesdays.......for 5 hours each time.....my eyes are going blind from
looking.......thus far I have looked in these areas......Any help you can
advise me with will be extremely helpful..........
I do believe the Welsh naming system comes into play here.
Please look through the following and tell me what you think I should do.
I am open for all suggestions.........like I said before.........confirmed
findings thus far on this is as follows:
1861 Census- listed Thomas THOMAS, son of Hugh THOMAS and brother to John
THOMAS. etc.(point of interest) age of Thomas THOMAS fits with Thomas
HUGHES.........place of birth is same......etc.
Parish of Llechycched,
Penythos..........Hugh THOMAS age 40,head of family Born in Ceirchiog
Elisabeth......... wife, age 37 born in Aberfraw
John...................son, age 10 born in Llechycched
Thomas.............son, age 7 born in Llechycched
William...............son, age 1 born in Llechycched
1881 Census...listed family of Thomas HUGHES and family of Hugh THOMAS there
living in BryEithin,Bodedern, Anglesey Wales
Also........after contacting the cottage owner of 1976, it has been
confirmed through the history of the cottage, that Hugh THOMAS paid the rent
on a yearly basis for his family to live there. Documents on home listed
this........
1891 Census.........lists...Thomas Hughes living there with his family, and
brother.........John THOMAS
1901 Census........lists.....Thomas HUGHES living there with
brother......John THOMAS , daughter Ellen HUGHES, and son Hugh HUGHES.
Please look over this and tell me what you think. I did also speak with a
Welsh Historian, she told me that it is very likely that Thomas THOMAS was
known as Thomas HUGHES at some point. Curious point is on all census
regarding Thomas HUGHES and Thomas THOMAS.......place of birth is the same
and so is age correlating with all..........interesting for sure!

Diolch Aled,
Mae'r briodas yma a'r ddau fedydd yn edrych yn addawol iawn.
I know very little about this family at all, they are my Mother in law's
ancestors, I have only recently started to find them, I had to wait for info from
the 1901 census to begin the research as family members were shy about
illegitimacy in her family and then I spent months of wasted time looking for a birth
in Penrhos Pwllheli, rather than Penrhollugwy
What I have so far has been found from the Census returns for Minffordd
Penrhosllugwy where the family lived between 1851 and 1901 (and possibly still do)
I shall be pursuing this line over the next few months and will keep the list
informed of any progress.

Thomas and Elinor/Ellen PERRY. Known children
were Owen born 1812 (in Quebec by 1851), William born 1814 and Henry/
Harry born 1918.
Sorry... they are not in Llanfaethlu in 1851 as far as I could see... it is
a
short census, few pages but I did not see them.... so sorry!

I have been spending pretty close to 3 hours sifting through my 4 years of
Research on my ROBERTS line . It has occurred to me that for a time I had
been chasing the wrong ROBERTS and had gathered a copy of a will ..........a
marriage certificate, and various other documents that are of no use to me.
So for starters, perhaps someone on the list can relate to this branch of
ROBERTS and use this information. So bear with me please, it reads as
follows:
Marriage in the Parish of Llandrygarn in the County of Anglesey in the Year
of 1826
Richard ROBERTS.......Bachelor
Jane WILLIAMS, .......Singlewoman
were married in the church by Banns on Third day of July in the Year of One
Thoufand eight hundred and Twenty Four
by William Johnson, Minister
In the Preference of Owen JONES
and William ROBERTS
I can't bring myself to toss this away, knowing how long and hard someone
may be searching for this tidbit of information.......so I do hope that
someone can use what I just shared.
Warmest Regards,
Lynn
