Sorry I could not reply straight away. I cannnot be of assistance re
your Welsh translation problem I am afraid. I can translate enough to
get by but am still a learner after many years unfortunately. I found
the Welsh difficult to follow in the old Parish records so your old
letters may be the same. I am sure someone could help you even if they
offer off list!
I am also interested in Llanwonno in that my sister in laws grand father
left Caernarfonshire for Llanwonno only to return as a widower with
young children. Perhaps they were recruiting for the mines at that
time?

In the early 1900's there were strikes and problems at the Penhyrn Quarry
and with Lord Penrhyn. Many left for the coal fields of South Wales. They
were recruited from there to America and Canada in the 1920's and earlier.
They were British Subjects and could travel to Canada without a passport.
With promise of a job they could obtain a Canadian passport and travel into
the US.

a brick wall in regards to my HUGHES and THOMAS Family. Anyone that can help
I would so appreciate it.

the 1881 Census... Anglesey
Margaret THOMAS (Hugh's sister) born abt. 1799 Cylched, Anglesey she was
listed as 82 yrs old on the 1881 Census....
John THOMAS born abt. 1851 (Hugh's son) born in Cylched, Anglesey.

There was also another son......Thomas HUGHES wh also resided there and was

Can anyone suggest where I could find out more about S J Griffiths (Morswyn)
who wrote the hymn 'Craig yr Oesoedd' inspired by the scenery at Porthdafarch
beach (Holyhead). Hopefully, thanks in advance!!
Sorry for the cross posting.
if you have information on the Bulkeley or Bulkley Family,or looking for assistance with your research
please reply to this e-mail.

Would your Thomas Owen by any chance be the one living in Cefn Ysgwydd in
1851 and was a blacksmith at Refail, Bryngwran from 1859 to 1889, and was
married to Mary Williams? He was born in Bodedern in 1820, the son of Thomas
Owen and Ellenor, and died at Cefn Gribyn, Carmel in 1895. If this is the
same Thomas Owen as yours I would be very interested in comparing notes with
you, as I have gone quite far back on his father's family, but his mother is
a brick wall.
Thanks, Iolo.

Hi all:
Been reading so much about research interests....here are mine once more.
Maybe, perhaps someone might find a connection.
HUGHES.....BrynEithin, Bodedern, Anglesey ---were farmers and my Grandfather
Thomas HUGHES born 1882 emmigrated to the USA and was a joiner(carpenter)
ROBERTS- a William ROBERTS son of Richard and Elizabeth ROBERTS...was a
"Miller" worked and lived for a time at Tre’r Sol or Tre’r Ddol.
ROWLANDS... William ROWLANDS father to Jane ROWLANDS...lived in the area of
Rhyd Caradog...the neighboring parish of Llechcynferwy north of Llandrygard
THOMAS...John THOMAS , Hugh THOMAS who was father to John and also my
Great-grandfather....Thomas HUGHES---area was Ceirchiog, and Cylched and
Bodedern.
JONES....Ellen JONES.....parents unknown at this time...perhaps may have been
a John JONES and Ellin....not sure Llanfair Neubwll.. Ellin, Ellen or
Elinor(not sure of spelling ) was married to Thomas
HUGHES...Great-Grandfather....
WILLIAMS....Margaret WILLIAMS married to Hugh HUGHES....also had a
son-adopted or took in called John Hughes Williams....natural mother was Ann
WILLIAMS and gave birth to him in the cottage at BrynEithin, Bodedern,
Anglesey .....so there is a connection there somewhat...
All of the above were born from 1799 to 1889....so this is the area of my
research.....
Also....does anyone know of the Oddfellows Ledger....and where it might be
kept..am sure my ancestors may of been in
it...."farmers"....Millers.....Tailor Journeyman...and Joiners---also a
Sailor..."Ship's Captain"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Listers,
I am writing as a follow-up to the discussion last
Saturday about an
error in the PARLOC [parish locator] computer program.
After reporting the error to Dave Bennett, the
program's author, I
received a reply (copied below) which indicates that a
new corrected
version (version 2.3) is now available. I assume it
can be downloaded
from http://www.dmbennett.freeserve.co.uk/ParLoc.htm
Kind regards,

John,
Many thanks for you note. I'm sorry for the delay but
I've been away.
You are quite right this error was pointed out to me
in March just
after
ver 2.2 was
released, but I'm afraid that I'm a bit behind with
the corrections
page.
I have just posted ver 2.3 which includes this and
many other
corrections.

I think Elida asked the question about Ty Mawr and in my experience
there is a Ty Mawr in most areas.
I have looked in a present day Post Code book and could only find one
Pencraigwen listed. The actual Post Code for Craigwen is LL71 8AT and
if you put this post code into either ww.streetmap.uk or multimap.com it
should give you the exact location. I have just tried it on Streetmap
and found on my favourites a web site for Elida with the Thomas family
on and saw the address Ty Mawr Pencraig Llandyfrydog so I searched again
for Llandyfrydog.
I found that my original search was just north of a place/house called
Capel Parc (I think) and the second search was just below this Capel
Parc. There were several unamed houses in Pencraigwen and any of these
could be Ty Mawr. Perhaps a search on a site such as 'Old Maps' would
give some of the names of the houses.
Good luck!

Hi Pat,
I've found that site just above Capel Parc on the www.streetmap.uk
There is an outline of a large house at the center of Penygraigwen.
It looks promising. I'll also try this www.multimap.com you mention.
Is there more than one "Llanwonno Parish" in Wales?
Another avenue I can try is going back and reading some of the old letters
from the Thomas family in Anglesey - that's a bit difficult since they are
in Welsh for the most part.
Do you, Pat, or any other interested Anglesey listers know of a Welsh to
English translation site on the net?
I'm very grateful for your assistance!

Hello Joyce,
My ggrandmother was Eliza Jones, and she married Owen Williams - both I
believe were from Llandegfan, as my grandmother Diana Jane Williams, was
born at Erw Wen in Llandegfan, April 21, 1894. Eliza had 2 brothers, Hugh
and R. Eurog Jones. Both my ggrandmother Eliza, and ggrandfather Owen, died
quite young, leaving my grandmother and her brother Owen, orphaned. I do
know that my grandmother's uncle Eurog brought her to Utica, NY for several
years, but I don't know if Owen was with them. I'm still trying to find his
family. If this is of any help to you, please let me know.

Hi Elida
Sorry for the delay in responding, work interrupted! Arlene has told you
where Llanidan is, unfortunately some of these old parishes don't appear on
modern maps!
Have you tried http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ ? If you go down to 'Gazetteer',
click on Anglesey & then 'P', you'll see Penygraigwen. Click on that & the
map will appear. You can enlarge the map. Looking on my Landranger map,
Penygraigwen is about 4 miles south of Amwlch.
I think it is unlikely that we have a connection, but you never know!
Best wishes
Margaret

I am wondering if anyone would know of the Oddfellows Ledger and some history
behind it. Also, where could one access this information. I was told it had
to do with farmers forming a group among themselves to assist one another. Am
I right or wrong on this one?

Elida,
My family is all still in the area, so I'm familiar with some of Anglesey.
My cousin Arfon Hughes, lives in the bone setters house near Holyhead. He
and 6 other men recently competed building an original thatched house. It
helps to have family in North Wales.
I also have a 1893 Gazetteer of the British Isles, so ask away about
parishes and villages. Before I forget, the parish you mentioned by
Pentreath is not listed, so I don't know if you have a misspelling or what.
Happy hunting,
Arlene
