Hi Margaret,
Are you aware of two books on Welsh clockmakers? One is by Paul Parker who has a
clockmaking business in Denbigh called Vale Clocks. The other is a book by Peake,
published by the Welsh Life Museum, part of the group of museums in the Cardiff
area. It was last published in 1975 so getting a copy might be difficult but any
clockmaker in Wales would have one, I should think. The assistant curator of
furniture and clocks there is Sioned Williams. The books might throw some light on
your Robert Turner.

Dear Alwyn & Anglesey List Members
Antipodean Greetings!
Like many others I have run into brick walls in my research and am waiting for some
synchronicity to kick in. Perhaps this listing will help!
My "HUGHES" family line at present extends over 6 generations beginning with Hugh
Roberts & Jane Edwards at the extant farm, "Clymwr"/"Clymmawr" at Llanbabo. The
line arose in Anglesey and then moved on to Liverpool with a lot of coming and
going. A great deal more information, including wills & photos from some of
generation 5 onwards, is available on the main and collateral lines.
Very keen to acquire information about the predecessors of Hugh Roberts and details
of how the farm "Clymwr" came into the possession of Hugh and Jane.
I have not posted before so I take the opportunity to supply a detailed listing of
what I have so far.

Dear Brian T. Hughes,
Your recent posting on Wls-Anglesey-L mentioned that your family was
affiliated with the Hugh Owen & Sons Tobacco firm in Amlwch. The
following is all I know of the firm--my family of Morgan and Hughes were
affiliated with a rival firm in Amlwch.
"During the nineteenth century tobacco processing became a significant
industry in Amlwch, which at that time was an important seaport concerned
with the export of mineral products from Parys Mountain. The main
tobacco firms were know as
1) Edward Morgan & Co. - lived at Ty Coch near St. Eleth
2) E. Morgan Hughes & Co. - lived at Fairview, Mona (Methusalem St.)
3) Hugh Owen & Sons (derived from Mostyn & Co. of the Madyn works).
These firms operated over a period from about 1820 to 1895, when E.
Morgan & Co. finally discontinued business. It is probable that Mostyn &
Co. was the first to be established and that Edward Morgan & Co. began as
tallow chandlers. All three companies produced shag and twist and
probably snuff, but only the E. Morgan Hughes company manufactured
cigarettes. "Young Wales" Amlwch shag for chewing and smoking was
manufactured by Hugh Owens & Sons and their motto was tuedda dyn at eiddo
da, ni siomir ei gais yma (man goes for good things in life so he won't
be disappointed by his wish here {meaning the tobacco])"
I am descended from the Morgan firms (E. Morgan & E. Morgan Hughes).

Around the turn of the century (1902), my ggrandfather and his entire
family left Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, to go to Liverpool, where he became
a tobacco merchant (as he had been in Amlwch) and then a "removal
contractor;" I think that means he moved furniture, but not sure. Their
home was in Kensington, Liverpool, and they attended the Kensington
Congregationalist Chapel (probably the Welsh-speaking one)in Liverpool.
He had been a choir director in the Congregationalist/Independent chapel
in Amlwch before this move to Liverpool.
GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES (1840Amlwch-1916Liverpool) and his wife MARY JANE
(WILLIAMS) (1852-1905Liverpool) had numerous children born in Amlwch, all
of whom went to Liverpool with their parents and married there. His
parents were JOHN and ANNE (nee Morgan) HUGHES; and her parents were
JOHN and MARY (nee JONES) WILLIAMS; her step-mother was MARY (nee
GRIFFITH) WILLIAMS of Amlwch.
CHILDREN OF GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES of Amlwch and Liverpool:
(1) JOHN HUGHES (1874-1951), m. Frances (Fanny) E. OWEN. One child - May
Hughes, who m. Robert Norman ROBERTS (he was also born in Amlwch and
moved to Liverpool).
(2) WILLIAM LEWIS HUGHES (1877-1930), m. Sarah...... Bill was disfigured
at Gallopoli.
(3) ANNE MARY HUGHES (1879-1959), m. Thomas WILLIAMS. Children: Ivor and
Glyn (male).
(4) HANNAH HUGHES (1881-1952), m. Alfred BUTLER. One child - Claude
(5) ELEANOR HUGHES (1885-1916) my grandmother, who came to the U.S. in
1915. She married Robert H. MORGAN of Liverpool. Both died in the flu
epidemic and my mother and her siblings were raised by foster
parents--WWI was going on and the children couldn't be returned to the
family in Liverpool.
(6) JAMES WILLIAMS HUGHES (1887-1974), m. Edith May CARTER. Two
children: Lilian and Geo. M.
(7) CATHARINE GERTRUDE HUGHES (1888-1971), m. OWEN PARRY WILLIAMS.
Children: David John and Mary Gwendolen, who married Fred BARNARD.
(8) ELIZA MYFANWY HUGHES (1889-1982), m. Capt. ROBERT MARKS. Children:
Robin (died), Jeffrey Ivor, and Marjorie.
(9) HERBERT IVOR HUGHES (1890-1964), spouse unknown
(10) EMILY MAUD HUGHES (1891-1979), m. Thomas Charles NUTTALL. Children:
Ronald Glynn, Norman Downing, Betty Marie (who m. Ernest Richard McKAY
JOHN HUGHES (1758-1845) - Captain of the Brig "Agnes" sailing out of
Amlwch,
Anglesey, Wales. He was married to ELLEN PAYNTER (1766-1849), who died
in
Amlwch of cholera. Their son was also a JOHN HUGHES (1800-1861/71), a
draper
in Amlwch and married to ANNE MORGAN (1798-1875). These were the parents
and grandparents of GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES (1840Amlwch-1916Liverpool). I
do have some information on the lines of these wives--Paynters and
Morgans. Also I have some information on the other children of John
Hughes and Anne Morgan.
In Amlwch, George Morgan Hughes was employed in the Tobacco firm of his
elder brother Edward Morgan Hughes (E. Morgan Hughes Tobacco) in Amlwch.
When Edward Morgan Hughes died around 1900, he wanted George to stay on
as manager of the family business. However, there was some family
dispute and I think that is what caused George and his family to leave
Amlwch and go to Liverpool to set up business. Also the Parys Mountain
Copper Mine was almost phased out of business and I think that hurt the
economic interests in Amlwch because the miners lost work. I have
collected some information from the internet and other sources on the
area of Amlwch. I also have some descendants of these Hughes going back
to Caernaravonshire, and the Paynters were originallly from Cornwall. I
haven't been able to get much on the Morgans because (again) there are so
many of them--same with a Parry tie.

MY WILLIAMS FAMILY OF AMLWCH
JOHN WILLIAMS was a master mariner whose family lived in Amlwch, ANG, in
the 1861, 1871, & 1881 census reports. John himself died between the
1871 and 1881 census reports, perhaps lost at sea. I don't know his
exact age or place of birth, except somewhere in Wales.
His first wife was MARY JONES and she died shortly after 3 May 1852, the
date of birth of her daughter MARY JANE WILLIAMS (1852-1905Liverpool);
this birth was in 8 Court, Edmund St., Liverpool. By the 1861 census the
family was living in Amlwch, ANG and John had remarried a MARY GRIFFITH
(b.1827-28), and she and John had other children: John G., William,
Thomas R. Williams. It is possible that there was a third wife named
Mary between 1861-1881, but I can't pin this down.
These are the known children of JOHN WILLIAMS:
MARY JANE WILLIAMS - b. 1852 Liverpool; m. G. M. HUGHES 1874
JOHN G.WILLIAMS - b. 1864 Amlwch - became a seaman (?)
WILLIAM WILLIAMS- B. 1865 Amlwch (became a joiner)
THOMAS R. WILLIAMS - b. 1869 Amlwch.
In the 1861 census, they lived at "Watermans Arms", Lower Quay St.,
Amlwch
In the 1871 census, they lived in Chapel St. (no house number), Amlwch
In the 1881 census, they lived at 20 Llaneilian Rd., Amlwch with MARY's
brother EVAN GRIFFITH (age 55, unmarried, sailor, b. Amlwch). John
Williams had died by now, but his son John G. Williams is also not in
that residence, perhaps at sea or married.
I would love to contact people researching this family.

Hello to listers.
I am researching my PRITCHARD ancestry in Anglesey. I am carrying out GRO
searches when I can book time in my local FHC and have located some of the
family in the 1881 census. I wonder if there are others researching the name
who may have links into my family or who may have found some of mine whilst
searching for theirs.
I am descended from WILLIAM PRITCHARD who was born about 1856 at Llangoed
(acc'g to census).
He married Elizabeth Roberts of "Tai Capel", Llangoed. He was a Trinity
House pilot and, from 1898 to 1915, coxswain of Penmon Lifeboat. Their
eldest son was JOHN PRITCHARD, my grandfather, who was born in 1879 at
Holyhead; there were six other children, only two of whom survived after
WW1. A daughter MARGARET married ELLIS DOYLE but another, ELIZABETH
("Lizzie"), never married. The family would have lived either at Llangoed
and at Penmon Point (Trwyn Du). Margaret actually lived at the Point until
her death in 1964.
I am trying to identify the parents and siblings of William and have
possibly found some of them in the 1881 census. The possible entries are
William and Ann Pritchard at Eirianallt, Llangoed with daughter Ann born
1863 and a grandchild Lizzie and nearby a Jane Pritchard, born 1852 at
Llangoed. There is a William Pritchard, born 1856, son of William and Jane
Pritchard, at Ty Newydd, Heneglwys, but I'm not sure this William is "mine".
Any help or knowledge would be appreciated
I am also looking for a WILLIAMS connection from Llanddyfnan area (Tyddyn
Forfydd Farm) 1840 onwards, about which I will post again.
Regards,
John

We have the 1851 census index for Anglesey and the following appear in

Elizabeth OWEN, 30 charwoman Elizabeth OWEN,78 ,pauper and Robert OWEN,12,

helps with your "brick wall" but does perhaps suggest that Elizabeth was an

Grace Jones was born at Tyn y Pistyll, Llandysilio in 1788, and christened 10 May 1788 the daughter of John Lloyd, ferryman, and Catherine Edwards. John Lloyd of Llanfair and Catherine Edwards of Llandysilio married on 20 January 1782, but I have not been able to track John's christening.
Catherine was christened 27 January 1760 at Llandysilio, the daughter of Rowland Edwards and Ellin.
My ancestor Owen Jones was born at Ysgubor Fawr, Llaneugrad the son of John Pritchard (1744-1833) and Anne Thomas.
John Pritchard was born 1744 at Greiglas, Llanallgo the son of Richard Hughes, and Anne or Jane Lloyd. Richard Hughes married Anne or Jane on 9 December 1744, and was described as widower of Llanallgo. (I would be grateful to know of his previous family). In 1746 their son Robert was born at Traeth Bychan. Richard was then described as a miller.Their other children were Mary (1748), Mary (1752) and Margaret (1756).
Anne Thomas , the wife of John Pritchard was born 1746 the daughter of Thomas Williams of Ysgubor Fawr, and Jonet Thomas. Thomas Williams married Jonet on 22 May 1743 at Llaneugrad, and their children were Ellin (1743), Anne (1746), and Jane (1750). Thomas Williams appears in the Land Tax Assessments for 1746-93 as the tenant of Ysgubor Fawr, and in 1744-5 as tenant of Godrefi, for the same land tax as Ysgubor Fawr, therefore clearly the same place. In that time there is another Godrefi, of equal assessment, farmed by a Henry Williams, also known as Henry ap William Edwards. It is therefore very tempting to believe that Henry is Thomas's brother, and that the farm of Godrefi was divided between the two brothers, but more solid evidence would be welcome.
Thomas's wife JonetThomas (1718-52) was the daughter of Thomas Jones and Elizabeth of Dinas, Llaneugrad. Thomas Jones's other children were one born 1708 whose name is illegible, John Thomas (1710), and Elizabeth Thomas (1715).
I would be grateful for any information about the Parry family of Penrhoslligwy namely:
(1) Hugh John Parry, born 1705 the son of John Parry and Anne. Hugh married Elizabeth, but their marriage is not in Penrhoslligwy. Their children were John (1739), Evan (1742), Elizabeth (1744), Richard (1747) and Harry (1753)
(2) John Parry, who married Anne, again the marriage was not in Penrhoslligwy registers and BTs. Theri children were Mary (1695), Ellen (1701) and Hugh John Parry (1705). John may be the son of Harry Parry and Elizabeth Bulkeley, who had children Thomas (1664), Ales (1667) and Blanch (1675), but since there are gaps in the BTs and registers around this period I can't prove this, and while John's grandson Harry born 1753 might support this theory, I would like some more solid evidence rather than taking a rather risky "leap of faith".
Llwydiarth is a small farm on the road between Amlwch and Llanerchymedd.
From the 1881 census it would appear to be a rented estate farm with a farm
manager and your Roberts working as a game keeper.

HI
I live in Sydney Australia and researching the above family.
John Crowell was born Ireland about 1815 and married Elizabeth?. They lived
in Holyhead, by the 1851 Census. They had 6 children that I have found. John
born 1844, Henry born 1847, Mary born 1849, William born 1851, Robert born
1853 and Martin born 1856. Martin went on to marry Mary Lloyd who was born
about 1858 Holyhead. Martin and Mary also had a son Martin born Holyhead
1881. Martin and Mary later moved to Liverpool. I don't know much about this
family and any connections would be wonderful.
