Hi Lynn
I have the same sort of problem as you - trying to fin Owen and Jones in
Anglesey!
Could this be your William HUGHES on the 1901 census?
Census place: Anglesea Bodedern
William Hughes, 23, b. Anglesea Bodedern, Butcher
By the process of elimination I found him to be married, head of
household.
Good luck in your search
Denise
Dear Lynn,
I have a WILLIAM LEWIS HUGHES b. 17 Oct. 1877, m. Sarah___ 14 Aug 1915 in
Liverpool. On the 1881 census he is with his parents Geo. Morgan Hughes
and Mary Jane William Hughes in Amlwch. There is no tie to Bodedern, as
far as I know (I don't even know precisely where that is). On the 1881
census he might be shown as simply a William or a Lewis. The family all
came from Amlwch and left there in 1902 to move to Liverpool.
I don't think this is your fellow.

Dear Ian,
please don't choke on your porridge, I for one totally agree with you. If
any listers don't know how to shorten your replies as Ian suggested, by all
means contact me off-list (daffodil(a)webtribe.net) and I will try to help.
And thanks to Alwyn for those URLS!!

Dear list,
I don't know if anyone might agree but I find with my limited time that some
messages are over weighty. Could list members please be selective about
which parts of old messages are forwarded along with their contributions?
We all (God willing!) remember the threads but, if it is thought helpful, a
couple of pasted or copied lines can be good.
I think if there is another "church photo" mail with fourteen links for
ancestry.com at the foot I will choke on my porridge!
I will take the hint if there is a flurry now!!

Here's the site for the 1851 census:

It's under Amlwch in the 1801:

In fact, I'd check all the Amlwch census at Genuki.org:

I have an 1893 Bartholomew Gazetter of the British Isles, which lists all

Would someone please be so kind as to do a look-up for me regarding Hugh
THOMAS of Bodedern, Anglesey Wales....I have the following family for 1851
and 1881...but need the 1871 Census look-up. If someone would please help me
...I would really appreciate it...This is what I have on these folks....:
farmer in Bodedern, Anglesey Wales and was alive in 1881 on the Census as
being in BrynEithin, Bodedern, Anglesey Wales. He rented the cottage on a
yearly basis and Hugh Thomas appears on the 1881 census at
Bryn y Eithen ,Bodedern?
I think I have found him in the 1851 census
for Llechylched. The following appear on PRO film no. HO 107 2520 folio 321
Hugh Thomas aged 30 Ag. lab b. Ceirchiog
Elizabeth Thomas wife age 30 b.Llangadwaladr
Hugh Thomas age 6 b. Llechylched.
John Thomas age 5m b. Llechylched
Also on the same folio was Ann Thomas ,widow, aged 64 b.Llanbeulan.
Unfortunately I can't tell whether she is in the same house as Hugh or what
the address is as I only have the census index which doesn't give full
details.
I was wondering if the age of Hugh's sister Margaret is correct in the 1881
census? Perhaps someone with the full census could do a look-up for me and
tell me the address ....That would help in this searching of mine....
Lynn
I am forwarding this for whatever use the Anglesey mailing list might
have for it. I can't vouch for the accuracy of all its parts. I think
my parts are pretty accurate (Hughes connection to Paynter line with
Ellen Paynter marrying Capt. John Hughes of the Brig Agnes). The Jonathan
Paynter family (wife Elizabeth Perks, sons Andrew, Thomas, John, and
William) came to Anglesey from Redruth, Cornwall about the mid-1700s.

Hi Ian
Thanks for the offer, I'll dig out the photo and send it later on today.
Incidentally, would you know where Bodwrog is? I have an OS map of Anglesey,
but couldn't find it.

I have a photo which I'm sure is of somewhere in Anglesey, tho not a church,
and I'd love to have this photo positively identified. Could that be made

Nancy,
If any of us have photos and a scanner, I think it would be great. I spoke
with my cousin's wife this morning, as Wyn is on location in Anglesey, and
she thought he would be happy to take photos of parish churches a long his
way of travel. Have to wait and see if they would accept them.

Is it possible to donate copies of photos to the site? I have some recent
photographs of the old and new churches in Llantrisant, for example, that I
would be happy to scan or obtain copies of for mailing.

My great grandparents David and Catherine Jones had a son Isaac born in 1869
who died later that year, their second son born in 1871 was also called
Isaac, sadly he also died 18 months later, so their third son born in 1873
was also called Isaac. When the fourth son was born in 1876 Isaac III was
very sick, and in anticipation of his imminent death, and obviously wanting a
son named Isaac they christened the fourth son with the same name. However
Isaac III recovered so I had two great uncle Isaacs, although the youngest
was always known as Dai or David all official documents have him recorded
with the baptismal name which he shared with his eldest brother :-)
All the best

Hi Betty,
No necessarily. Our first Richard Griffith b. 1839, was more than 16 when
he passed. The next boy born, my great grandfather, was named Richard
Griffith, b. 1854-1918. Don't discount the possibility. Remember there was
not the birth control available, so women had children well into their 40's.
They often had young children as old as grandchildren. My mother is only 2
1/2 years older than her nephew. Mom is now 80, was the last child, and has
been the only living child in her family for years. Nain was 40 when she
had mom, and had been having children since the age of 18. This is not
uncommon in families of our ancestors.
Don't rule it out.
Arlene

Dear Arlene,
I thought about this. Renaming a new child for a deceased one occurred
in my family also, but only when the first child had died very young
(under two). This William Williams was too old for that to have
happened, I would think.

Betty,
Is there a possibility that the older William died and the next boy was
named William? This was common and drove me crazy with my Griffiths
family
until I had all the census years together and found the one missing and a
younger one appearing.
Regards,
Arlene

Thanks, Neil. Oh how I wish!
However, if I believe the census report of 1881, he died between
1871-1881, unless he turned up after having been thought to have died at
sea. . I added the projected birth years to your 1891 census posting
(see below) One significant entry is that of the son William Williams
and the birth yars don't match. My William Williams was b. 1866 and the
1891 William was b. 1874. Are you sure about the census age on the 1891
report? I don't think my John Williams would have had two sons named
William Williams. A shame that I can't reconcile it because this family
has been my brick wall for years, and part of the problem is that there
were too many John Williams who were master mariners. Plus other members
of my family believe that my Mary Jane Williams (b.1852) had no sisters,
only brothers. The only way I can make this work is for John Williams to
have come back, been widowed, and remarried a Grace Williams who had 3
children by a previous marriage to a Williams. A real squeeze.
Here is the 1881 census showing his wife as a widow:
20 Llaneilian Rd., Amlwch - 1881 Census
WILLIAMS, MARY - age 53 - widow head of household - b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM - son age 14 - joiner - b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, THOMAS R. - son age 12 - scholar - b. Amlwch
GRIFFITH, EVAN - brother age 55 - unm'd - sailor - b. Amlwch
(Thus GRIFFITH is probably the maiden name of MARY WILLIAMS)
Here is the 1871 census for the same family:
Chapel St. (no house number given)
WILLIAMS, MARY - age 44 (b.1827-8), Master Mariner's Wife, b. Amlwch
WILLIAMS, JOHN G. - son age 7, b. Amlwch (b.1864 when mother 37)
WILLIAMS, WILLIAM - son age 5, b. Amlwch (b.1866 when mother 39)
WILLIAMS, THOMAS R. - son age 2, b. Amlwch (b.1869 when mother 42)
(*Mary Jane Williams is not living at home--employed or school? Would be
19 yrs old
It appears that husband (John Williams) had died between 1871 and 1881)
