Stan,
Thank you! I have a book in which on the first page is written:
EVAN THOMAS
Ty Mawr
PENGRAIGWEN
LLANDYFRYDOG
I put the term "Ty Mawr" into the "Streetmap" site and reached what looked
like a forest preserve - in a location identified as "Conwy". Obviously,
that was not what I was seeking.
Evan Thomas was my grandfather, who emigrated to USA about 1882.
Does Stan or anyone else know of a place identified as PENGRAIGWEN?
With much appreciation,
Elida in South Carolina (SC), USA

I have a LARGE 3 lens michrofiche reader, in excellent working order, which i don't need,
which i will give free to anyone (preferably a FH society) who needs it. All i ask is that a small,
say £10, donation is given to Comic Relief.
Whoever takes it must pick it up.
I also have a Pentium 133Mhz computer (minus operating system), with CD ROM and monitor, which
i no longer need, which i will give to anyone (preferably a FH society) who needs it. All i ask is that a small,
say £30, donation is given to Comic Relief.
Whoever takes it must pick it up.
There are no catches and all is legit, it is just that i don't need them any more.
I would prefer them to go to a good home and that they do some good to Family
Historians as well as Comic Relief.
I have posted this to all the lists i subscribe to and hope the ADMINS do not
mind, as it is for charity.
First to respond will get.

Hi again Len
I have looked at my Amlwch databases and come up with the following
information.
Thomas Woodruff Born Derbyshire 1778 (amlwch 1851)
Thomas Woodruff Born 1871 labourer living at Pentre Vivian (Amlwch 1881)
Elizabeth Woodruff Born 1781( Amlwch 1881)
Have you any information to suggest why he moved to Amlwch?
Was there a connection between copper mining in Derbyshire and copper mining
at parys mountain?
pentre Vivian housed many copper miners and precipitation pit labourers at
that time
I also have George Woodruff ( YOB 1845) married to Jane living in salem
street Amlwch in 1881 he is listed as an Engine driver at the copper works.
This would most likely be a static water pumping or ore hauling steam
engine.
A John Woodruff born 1815 is listed in Amlwch 1851also as an engine driver.
I would like to here of any other family information you may have especially
in connection with the parys mountain copper works.
Details of the parys mountain works and searchable databases of the amlwch
censuses can be found on my web page.
www.parysmountain.co.uk
Hope this helps

Dear Members,
If anyone has information about the following I would be most appreciative. My grandmother, Elizabeth Mary Harrison, was born in Llangefni on June 26, 1892. Her mother was Lucy Ellen Williams who married George Harrison. After my grandmother was born a son, George Harrison, was born on November 13, 1893. The family traveled to the states around the year 1895 and settled in Ohio. My great-grandfather purchased a large parcel of land which is now Mentor-on-the -lake.
As the Anglesey list seems to be getting more active I thought I should
post my interests, my wife's ancestors, the principal names being
WOODRUFF and JONES.
We believe that THOMAS WOODRUFF and ELIZABETH GOODWIN, were born in
Derbyshire about 1778 and were married there in 1801. They evidently
settled in Amlwch. Thomas was a labourer and Elizabeth a governess.
Their three children that we know of were SARAH, GEORGE and JOHN. Sarah
married WILLIAM STEPHENS in Amlwch in 1827 and they had six children.
George became an engineer with the Irish Mail Boat and John was an
engineer who worked on the Mydded Pass Railway. John married JANE
THOMAS in Amlwch July 7, 1835. They had eight children one of whom was
ELIZABETH.
Family notes tell us that Elizabeth married twice, the first time to a
Mr. GOODWIN (but is there confusion with her grandmother who was
Goodwin??). Anyway, Elizabeth eventually married WILLIAM JONES.
William's parents were OWEN JONES AND CATHERINE (EVANS) whose other
children included LEWIS, EVAN, HARRY, HUGH and OWEN. Owen (the father)
was a farm worker and the family seemed to live in several places like
Llanddaniel, LLanerchymedd, Llanidan and perhaps Heneglwys.
WILLIAM JONES AND ELIZABETH were in the clothing/drapery business,
presumably in Llanidan since their two sons, WILLIAM HENRY AND JOHN OWEN
were born there. John Owen was my wife's Taid. He married Mary Jones
who was also in the clothing business and they owned The XL in Corwen
for many years.
We are currently searching for the marriage of William Jones and
Elizabeth Woodruff (Goodwin?), so far with no luck, at least on the GRO.
We also want to find the ancestry of Owen Jones and Catherine Evans who
might have married around 1830. There are some possibilities on the
IGI.
Finally, one of Elizabeth Woodruff's brothers was JOHN WILLIAM WOODRUFF,
born maybe in the 1840s and probably Amlwch. One of his sons was
WILLIAM WOODRUFF who became known in the family as Uncle Will Woodruff.
There also seems to be a connection of John Woodruff to Milham in
Cumberland which we cannot determine.
So, there it is. Any connections out there?

Hello Bob,
I can tell you that Hugh Jones married Sarah Prichard in St. Cybi, the
parish church in Holyhead, on 22nd March 1809. Both were living in Holyhead,
both were single, and they were married by banns.
All the best,
Stan.
Gwynedd FHS.
Regarding "Caera", there is a farm called Pen y Caerau in Aberdaron where I
have connections and which used to be tenanted by a Parry family. They have
connections with an Owen family of which one member, James Owen, went to the
US to Oneida County, NY, to found a chapel called Pen y Caerau.
If this sounds familiar, please get back to me as I can write off-line with
some more information.
Yours

Good day Anglesey List,
While I have been watching the Anglesey list grow day by day, I have not
posted my interest in the past.
The surname Jones is not the easiest to trace in Wales. My particular
Jones family lived on the west side of Holyhead in a home named Bwlch
Alltran. Today Bwlch Alltran is a street but the home remains.
My earliest Jones is Hugh Jones b about 1778. Hugh married Sarah Prichard
b about 1784. Both were born in Holyhead. Hugh, according to census
information, was a blacksmith.
A son Thomas Jones, b about 1827, was a tailor in Holyhead and may have
married Sarah Ann Humphreys. I say may have because the census records
indicate the wife's name as Lina. Thomas and Lina lived at 14 Black
Bridge, Holyhead, and had a daughter Sarah Ann b about 1854 (which supports
the mothers name of Sarah Ann I suppose), Hugh b 1858, and William T. b
1874.
Any information on this family would be appreciated.

Bonjour Susan,
I'm sorry not to get your reply to my e-mail, but I don't know the reason
for the failure. Perhaps you could try again as your last e-mail came
through without any problems.
I'm sure the multiple e-mails coming to you is no reflection on Outlook
Express or on your sanity. I'm sure I'm to blame ( Sorry !!! ). The first
outbreak of foot and mouth began in Wales in the village of Gaerwen, which
is only 4 miles from my home. Do you think I may be the first human case ?
It would account for the errors with the multiple e- mails.
Regards,
Stan,
Gwynedd FHS.
