Hi all!
Several people asked me for the results of my, umm, request for comments
on this issue. Here it is:
The majority of people who responded that they didn't think there was
anything wrong with listing Ms Korotev's books as available for
purchase. Most thought it was a service and people could make up their
own minds to purchase or not.
After thinking it over, I came to the same conclusion. Certainly I'd
appreciate it if I could find a publication that I wanted listed for
sale on a genealogical page. So, I've listed her offer, along with her
ph. #. I guess she doesn't have e-mail, and my lookup volunteer got her
permission first. I did not, however, mention price. I sure wish she'd
offer to do lookups, tho!
Thank you everybody who gave me their thoughts on this issue. I really
appreciate it!
Happy Hunting!

I list courthouses or other such public accessable sites. When I know what their copying

I don't think it is kosher to say 'you can buy xx book about this county or
name' from xyz company. However, if there is a bookstore in the county has
history/genealogy related items, I don't think it would hurt to say that in the county
the following bookstore has a genealogy section. No dollar values are mentioned and it
would be a help for visitors to an area who might be looking for such info.

I too, am interested in clarifying this dilemna.
Here are my thoughts, for what they are worth.
The purpose of the USGenWeb project has been to get as much "free"
information to the genealogists as possible. That has always been my philosophy, and I
give as much free help as my time will allow.
But I also do not frown on someone trying to get "reinbursed" for their
time and effort spent in copying cemetery inscriptions, newspaper clippings etc etc.
When I am browsing the counties where I need family information, I really appreciate
all the "free" stuff. As a genealogists, I would also like to know what
publications are available that I could purchase.
So listing those items, that are for sale, is still doing a service for any
genealogists, in making them aware of what's available.
But I think that I would draw the line on phone numbers, personally. Or strike a
deal with the person doing the copying.......[can you do a small cemetery for us to put
on-line, and we will let people know what you have for sale?]
Nothing like working together, to help genealogy advance.
I am now stepping down from my soapbox. Honest.
