Brenda,
The 1850 WI Federal Census Index lists the following HIGHLANDs:
HIGHLAND, James MILW 338 Milwaukee
HIGHLAND, James MILW 338 Milwaukee
HIGHLAND, William ROCK 234 Janesville
That's it! Only 3 on the whole census.
Requesting the Milwaukee and Rock Co.'s films thru your local FHC would
probably be a good way to start.
As someone else mentioned, the page numbers (338 & 234) will probably
not be of much help. But the townships are listed, which should reduce
your search time. Well, except in Milwaukee. Maybe watch for page
numbers as you scan thru the film.
Hope this helps!
Happy Hunting!

I know that this is a long shot - but that's what all genealogist go for
from time to time, isn't it? I am Vice-President and Research Chair of our
Tishomingo County Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society and am
trying to help a friend. Her ancestor was William HIGHLAND born in 1845 in
Wisconsin. She has good documentation of him from his adulthood in Alabama,
Georgia, and Mississippi; however, I am trying to locate him on the 1850
Census since this one would show his parents, siblings, etc. The problem
is - we don't know what county in Wisconsin! Do you have any suggestions as
to how I could retrieve a scan for the Highland name on all Wisconsin
counties in 1850? After reaching adulthood, he became a medical doctor.
The 1900 Lauderdale County Alabama census lists his birthplace as
Wisconsin and his parents' birthplace as Scotland. Family tale has it that
he came from Wisconsin down the river to Tennessee. I am also a look-up
volunteer for our county and I realize what amount of work this is - but,
please, if you can give us any direction we might take on this! Thanks in
advance for your help!
