Subject: Re: Tuscania Troop Ship

Carolyn, October 28, 1999
I have been writing a book on the Tuscania. For the last 8 months I
have
been creating a survivors list for my book, with some information about
some of the soldiers. I am listing the survivors by state. Hopefully I
can help you with your question.
I have been working on this book since my father died in 1994. My father
was orphaned as a small boy, never really knowing his own father. Whats worse
is that the information that my father did have about his father was not
correct. You see my Grandfathers Army discharge paper states that he was
torpedoed on the Lusitania/Tuscania Feb. 5, 1918. My father grew up
believeing that his father was on the Lusitania. In fact he died never
knowing the truth. I knew that the Lusitania was not torpedoed on Feb. 5,
1918. So I was confused by this entry. I contacted the Cunard Archives at the
University of Liverpool and asked them to check for his name on the passanger
list of the Lusitania. No he was not on that ship. And yet I have a lot of
documents and newspaper articles that state that my Grandfather was indeed on
the Tuscania. Through my research I found out that the Tuscania's last voyage
she docked in the berth that was formally the Lusitania's. And some how that
was being associated in my Grandfathers dicharge papers.
I set out trying to find the facts on the Tuscania. Originally I did not
intend to write a book, but one day I thought that there may be others out
there that also are seeking information on the Tuscania. I decided not to let
my research just go to waste, I decided I would write a fact filled book on
the Tuscania.
Anyway you were asking about the men from Wisconsin. Well Wisconsin had the
majority of the 32nd Divison Guardsmen. They were considered at the time to
be the elite of the 32nd Divison during that time. I have a book that I paid
and arm and a leg for, entitled 32nd Division in the World War. It was put
together by the Wisconsin and Michigan War history Commision. It only briefly
talks about the Tuscania in one paragraph, that is all. However it has an
honor roll of those who died. So when I get done with my list of Survivors of
the Tuscania I can cross reference them through this honor roll to see if any
of them went on to Europe and met their fate there.
There were men from Michigan in the 32nd Divison as well like the 107th
Engineer Supply Train. But my Grandfather George was not in the 32nd
Division. My Grandfather was in the 20th Engineers "Forestry Division" of the
6th Battlion.
So far here is the incomplete list of names of the Surivors from Wisconsin.
