Mari, I think if you had been in the project for less than a year,
worked
hard to put things online, spent money to get items, only to be told that
you were more interested in graphic design, you would feel a bit offended as
well.
Jan, I was on the project less than a year. I took over Hardin in late
Sept., and the reviews are done in April. I don't know who reviewed your
site, but I think they could have used a little finesse in their critique.....
What did this person know about my site? Did she realize that I had
just
put up a farm directory? No, yet she criticized me. I think that it would
have been more palatable if the SC or ASC as it was had said I passed the
review, showed an effort of working on the site, and looked forward to the
next review, knowing that the site would grow. Just a tad of encouragement
is all it takes. The comments from the reviewer could have been left out
and the reviewers name could have been left out.
This is what I do, Jan....give the things that need corrected, and then add
that the site is easy to navigate (if it is)...or something of that
sort. I think there is less of the critical happening now......partly due
to the fact that most of those who review are the same ones....and most are
hand picked.
As far as knowing what has been added, or how much the person knows about
your site.....I think that it's better if they don't know....because that
is the view that a researcher has when they first come to a site. Unless
you habitually post to the State list that you have added something to your
site, I doubt that even the SC or ASC really know what ALL the CCs are
doing. And, as MAK already said.....it's quite a handful for the two of
them to get through all the counties in the state, and then turn around and
do it again. A review system, regardless of what it gives as "must haves"
would eliminate much of that for them even.
I think that one of the reasons the reviewer's name is there, is kind of a
lever for them to be responsible for what they are saying. I don't have
any qualms about putting my name down. And, if someone disagrees with what
I say, let them contact me and we'll talk about it.
In six years that I have been with WIGenWeb, I have yet to see *any*
comments from a review. Only one comment, if it might have been taken as a
review, has been sent to me in all that time, over a link I didn't have to
the adjoining county.
Jan, you need to remember that this is not meant to be critical. It is
meant to be helpful....and I'll say again, that the reviewer who did yours
could have been a little more tactful, by and large, the system is good and
does work. Shoot....I even reviewed Rich's site this year! LOL
While I realize reviews can be good, there has to be a happy medium.
Yes....I agree. Which is why I'm sold on them. With more tact, and
honest, constructive help, the sites DO improve. :)
I've done the reviews for three years now, and it's taking less and less
time.....I read that as the CCs are doing a whale of a job, and I really
believe that the reviews play a good part of the reason they are. Maybe
they "spruce" the sites up just before the reviews......fine. At least it
DOES get done, and it stays that way more often than not.
